  • The Next Athletic Director

    We might as well talk about this. Anybody know of a good candidate? Or maybe somebody can offer a general profile of the kind of person they think might be a good choice.

    Here's what I'm hearing, profile-wise: It'll be a second banana at a D1 or the top person at an up-and-coming D2. The only specific requirement: It has to be a football school.

    That's the profile I'm hearing out there.

    Any thoughts? Discuss.

    Will they need to have a doctorate degree?

      I think generally yes, but I'll bet the job announcement will say Ph.D. preferred which means exceptional candidates without the doctorate will be considered.

      That's a guess.

        I think the best choice would be a fairly younger (40's or so) assistant AD from a major school. I think having a big time background would be instrumental in helping us get to the next level.

        That is interesting that you say they are looking for someone from a football school, my first instinct was one from a basketball school in order to try to jump start our men's program. But I would definitely not argue against a football minded AD!

          I posted in another thread, a couple of criteria, not necessarily related to each other:

          1) administrative post (pref. Assistant AD or higher) in a midwestern Land-Grant or other D-I public university;

          2) Previous exposure (student, ass't coach, etc.) with SDSU.

          Additionally, I'd like to see a person with a combination of experience in sports marketing, and in sports organization management.

          Bill Gates and/or Warren Buffet on his speed-dial wouldn't hurt, either.

            I don't disagree. But I would note that Associate AD Mark Burgers is very capable in the area of marketing. The "marketing" problem right now is a resource problem. It's not that people in the department don't understand or have an interest in the area. Plus, the university is hiring a VP for University Communications who will likely be of some help in the area of marketing.
