Another summer and it looks like more success for the Jackrabbit Men's golf team at the South Dakota State Golf Association Match Play Tournament in Aberdeen!

3 out of the eight finalists are Jackrabbits and Trent Peterson, Coach Baszler's #1 player didn't even play in the tournament.

Nice work and good luck tomorrow in the Quarterfinals, Brian(incoming freshman, Tim(Junior, I think??) and Geoff(Senior)!

    Re: 2008 SDGA Match Play

Brian Wynia and Geoff Mead unfortunately had to play each other in the quarterfinals. The incoming freshman (Wynia) got the best of Geoff Mead and won in 19 holes. Tim Kalil (to-be senior) also won his quarterfinal match against Ross Menke. That put Brian on one side of the bracket and Tim on another, setting up a potential all-Jackrabbit final. In this afternoon's semifinal matches, Kalil won 2&1 over Brett Egge while Wynia was defeated by the defending champion and current New Mexico senior Tom Carlson.

Tomorrow Kalil will face Carlson in the final 36-hole match. Best of luck to Tim and let's hope he brings home some hardware!

      Re: 2008 SDGA Match Play

Kalil ends up losing a roller-coaster match to Tom Carlson yesterday as there were 7 lead changes throughout the 35-hole match. Congrats to Tim on a great Match Play tournament. Seems as though the Jackrabbit Men's Golf Team thrives in match play as stated in Terry's blog:

The SDSU men's golf team seems to thrive in the match play format. Trent Peterson won the Minnesota state tournament. Tim Kalil finished second in South Dakota, while Brian Wynia reached the semis by beating teammate Geoff Mead. Justin Jenkins made the quarterfinals in North Dakota.

An Argus article (by way of the Aberdeen American News) about the SDGA Match Play final:

Carlson triumphs after marathon at match play
Sioux Falls golfer tops Kalil 2 and 1
John Papendick • Aberdeen American News • July 15, 2008

ABERDEEN - It was like a great heavyweight fight with knockdown after knockdown that lasted eight hours.

After 35 holes of golf, 93-degree heat and 23-mph winds, Tom Carlson of Sioux Falls emerged as the winner of the 98th annual state match play tournament Monday at Moccasin Creek Country Club. He edged Tim Kalil of Rapid City by being ahead by two holes with only one to play (2 and 1).

There were seven lead changes. Plus, the match was tied up on 12 of the 35 holes.

      ....

"Nobody could hold a lead out there today," said Kalil, who plays for South Dakota State. "I just needed to be more consistent. Tom was more consistent than I was and putted a little better than I did. But I had a good week mentally. I made a lot of good decisions. I really like where my golf game is at going into my last year of college. I am excited for the college season to start."
