In ony its second year at SDSU, the Jackrabbit Equestrian team won the University of Nebraska Western Competition, with 10 teams competing including the University of Nebraska, North Dakota State University and U-M Crookston, finishing first with 66 points, with U-M Crookston in second with 48 points. Competing against 10 other teams, SDSU claimed high-point honors during both the morning and afternoon sessions. Led by high-point rider Abby Knobbe, SDSU recorded 34 points in the morning, compared to 22 by Minnesota-Crookston, Nebraska and North Dakota State. Knobbe placed first in her section of open reining and took third in her section of open horsemanship during the morning competition, solidifying her third-place standing for the regional AQHA Cup Rider award.
Freshman Lydia Placzek finished in a tie for the Reserve high-point rider award following a section title in open reining and fourth-place finish in open horsemanship. Jordanne Blair and Kelsey Likness added section titles in open horsemanship during the morning session, and Chelsea Steen contributed a first-place finish in novice horsemanship. Runner-up finishes were recorded by Brianna Grohs in open horsemanship and Nicole Jensen in novice horsemanship. Tory Ruppert and newcomer Julie Corcoran claimed section titles in both the morning and afternoon sessions as the Jackrabbits swept the day with 32 points. Ruppert claimed a pair of section titles in novice horsemanship, with Corcoran notching a pair of section titles in beginner horsemanship.
Other section winners during the afternoon included: Brianna Grohs, open reining; Jenelle Bussard, novice horsemanship, and Trisha Smeenk, intermediate horsemanship. Molly Seidel and Blair in open horsemanship, and Steen and Kristen Carlson in novice horsemanship tallied runner-up finishes.
Minnesota-Crookston took second in the afternoon competition with 26 points.
SDSU has had six riders qualify for the March 8 IHSA Western Regional, which will be held at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Knobbe will represent the Jackrabbits in both open reining and open horsemanship, while Blair will compete in open horsemanship. In the intermediate horsemanship division, Jessica Carr, Jensen, Ruppert and Steen all have
qualified.
