$100M drive to pump research for SDSU
Fundraising campaign would launch in 2009

South Dakota State University will begin a drive in 2009 to raise more than $100 million to back the school's expanding role in the state's economy, its president, David Chicoine, said Tuesday.

The money will support student scholarships, faculty and new buildings - all traditional goals. But underlying the drive will be the intent to strengthen the university for its new push into academic research and the industrial and scientific applications flowing from it.

The goal for the drive isn't set. Chicoine would say only that the figure will be well in excess of $100 million, more than double the previous such drive 10 years ago.
Chicoine, his deans and other leaders on the Brookings campus are considering where to set the goal. A wish list will get pared down at the same time workers are lining up advance donations. He wants pledges for half the money in place before the drive begins publicly, which is why officially it remains 18 months away.

"The bigger the number, the longer the silent part of the campaign," Chicoine said.
The need for cash is not new, nor is the effort to raise it.

This is news to me, but I think its the right step and the right time. I think our President will take SDSU to a new level.

I wish you guys any luck you need. Rumor has it that the early goal of our campaign(Momentum) was to be $100M, but they backed off to $75M because they thought the former was too ambitious. It turned out that we met the stated goal one year early(of a total of 3) and we'll probably hit the $100M mark by the time the campaign wraps up at homecoming.

A sucessful, major fundraising campaign can bring huge dividends well beyond the money raised. Momentum has raised faculty and student morale on campus(2/3 was earmarked for fellowship and scholarship endowments) and it has redefined what's possible for NDSU.
