    Re: Marketing

Also SDSU attendence has not been bad considering just a mediocare win/loss seasons.  The agriculture community had taken advangate in promoting the cereal and beef bowl, so we have had good crowds.

I don think we can compete with any high school reunion and I dont think that is our intent. We already have a following from Sioux Falls and it will grow.  I am not a marketing specialist. Yes Carr Associates recomended games in Sioux Falls and that will happen.

What other things will work to bring Sioux Falls people up the road I dont know.

      Re: Marketing

All types of marketing needs to be improved. I just checked the SDSU website for the official men's BB schedule - last updated on Aug 18th. That means no mention of Marquette or Colorado. Once those were confirmed the site should have been updated. As you may have seen from my post about the Hitch Covers, I'm not the person to do that, but they must have someone with computer knowledge that could get it changed quicker than this. Season ticket prices are posted now, but if you can't count on the schedule being current, people will be more reluctant to purchase tickets.

        Re: Marketing

Does SDSU have a coaches show for basketball? ???

NDSU has a half-hour TV coaches show for football and BB.

          Re: Marketing

Goes back to my origional statement, SDSU is way understaffed, most places have one person dedicated to web sites alone much less marketing etc.

We have to get away from the GA thing and hire trained professionals because it all rolls downhill with recruiting etc.

            Re: Marketing

SDSU may be understaffed, but my experience with DI sports marketing suggests that nobody has "moved away from the GA thing". Student workers (both undergraduates and graduate students) form the bulk of the sports marketing staff everywhere I have been (Iowa, Purdue, Oklahoma).

Here at OU, a handful of undergraduates and graduate students, supervised by one or two professional staff members produce all the Web site and media guide content and handle media visits. With proper guidance (and you don't have to hire a bunch of new staff) student workers can do a great job of producing content for marketing and media relations purposes.

That said, everyone on this thread is right, of course, that there is always more that can be done.

              Re: Marketing

Attendence at the Cereal Bowl was 8718 using turnstiles that provide an accurate count.  Down at the HIGH SCHOOL BOWL IN SIOUX FALL Attendence was as
              follows per the Argus Leader:

"That was bad news for visiting Lincoln, which seemed blinded by the glare Saturday as the top-ranked Knights rolled to a 38-0 Greater Dakota Conference victory before an estimated crowd of 9,000 at Howard Wood Field."

Note the use of the word estimated which could have been an actual count of 7500 or less.

BTW, SOUTH DAKOTA'S TEAM USD drew 4486 for a big game against MSU-Moorhead.

One thing SDSU is trying this year is to have a social  after the game for all those who have given 100 bucks or more to the Jackrabbit Club. The social is held in the big tent in the Backyard. This how you collect on the 20 percent of your donation that is not deductible by the IRS.   There is no formal structure so if you want to tear the coaches apart for making bad decision you have that opportunity to do that face to face. I met Darren Wilkensen, and had  good conversations with Luke Meadows and Doug McFadden assistant coaches.

There were not too many present for this first social but one is scheduled after each home game. So Jackrabbit Club members in town for the game, should take advantage of this social event.

The only disadvantage is that some folks head for home thinking the evening is getting late.  This is an idea that needs time to work. I got to meet 89 Rabbit and spouse in person, so it worked for me.

They have a tent that can be enclosed so even after the Augie game in Nov, they will have heaters to make it warm.

                Re: Marketing

The social is a nice idea. I wonder if something similar will be available after BB games. With a single game starting at 7:30 or 8:00 it would not be that late after the game.

Or, using the same logic, it could have been 10,500.

Nice to see the turnout at SDSU. This week will be interesting. It is the only game of the year that is not aspecial event. You know that NDSU will draw well, as will Hobo Days. I am curious to see if SDSU does any extra advertising, etc., to draw folks from Sioux Falls now that the big high school games are done.

                    Mike:
Saturday's game with Western Oregan is the Shriners game. From what I understand they help promote the game by giving away free tickets so I suspect there will be people there at the game, that would not ordinarily attend.

I think the game could draw 5500 to 7000.

Thanks for the info on the Shriners game. We have a guy here at the station that is a past Potentate, so I will get some info from him and promote it on the Jack's show Tuesday!

I suspect there will be at least 8,000 again. I'll be one of them. Only game I can make it to this year. Any particular spot in the tailgate lot I should look for people? Can't wait to get back to Brookings.

                          Mike H,

Are you planning on going to the game - being the 3 or 4th best football venue in the state? The second part was a cheap shot - no need to get upset.

Nope. Going to a wedding of two SDSU alums. How dare they schedule a wedding that day! I think they must lack vision ! Thanks for asking, though.

                              Go State!  ;D

I'm in a wedding this saturday so will not be in attendence. I've asked my friend and his soon-to-be wife if we can have the reception dinner in the backyard ;D. He also would like to do this but his fiance said no :'(. I'm getting married in Brookings next year when we host Cal-Poly. There's still time to talk my fiance into tailgaiting for the reception ;D
