  • Imitation is Flattery-Schwans helps SWMU

In the Argus this morning there is a news story how Schwans in Marshall is starting a scholarship program that sounds similar to the Jackrabbit Guarentee program. The big difference is that it is geared to the Twin Cities prospective students.  Funny part there is no endowment, and what happens when Schwans has a down turn in business? Things like a corporate sponsorships and scholarship layouts are often cut. SWMU would be smart to endow some of this money.  With only 12 students covered the first year this should not have an impact on SDSU.

Schwan's puts $800,000 into college scholarships

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Schwan Food Co. has an idea for luring students from the Twin Cities to this rural town on the prairie: promise to cover their educational costs if they study here.

The Marshall-based food manufacturer is making that offer to about 200 graduates of Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools if they attend Southwest Minnesota State University during the next few years.

Schwan's "is pleased to recognize these students who have put forth the personal effort and demonstrated the academic discipline in high school to prepare themselves for higher education," said company president M. Lenny Pippin.

Students may apply for the scholarships if they have at least a B grade-point average and an ACT score of 22.

The scholarships - which will cost Schwan's $800,000 - cover tuition, fees, books, room and board. The program starts next fall with about 12 freshmen, and it eventually will involve about 50 students each year.

"It's just wonderful," said David Danahar, Southwest Minnesota State's president. "Among other things, it opens up opportunity for people to come down who wouldn't otherwise think about it. It will bring some energy into the community, and it underscores the quality of what we do."
