Jacks drop swim opener at UNO

OMAHA, Neb. -- Sophomore Mariah Pavlicek earned a victory in the 200-yard backstroke to lead the South Dakota State University women's swimming team at its season-opening dual Saturday at Nebraska-Omaha.
A veteran Maverick squad defeated SDSU 219-68, winning 14 of 16 events.
Pavlicek, from Bettendorf, Iowa, clocked a winning time of 2 minutes, 21.62 seconds in the 200 backstroke and added a runner-up finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.32.
The Jackrabbit 200 freestyle relay team of Kaye Strohbehn, Katie Kaufman, Catherine Coursen and Chelsea Colborn also claimed victory in a time of 1:51.94.
Other top performances by the Jackrabbits included a runner-up finish by freshman Chelsea Colborn in the 100 butterfly, 1:04.54, and a three third-place performances by newcomer Heather Youngberg in the 50 freestyle, 25.96 seconds; 100 freestyle, 56.71 seconds, and 200 freestyle, 2:05.18.
SDSU returns to action Oct. 28 with a dual at Morningside (Iowa). That meet also will mark the first comeptition of the season for the Jackrabbit men.
