School nears one-fourth of $20M goal in first year

South Dakota State University graduate Chuck Derdall received a phone call one evening a few years ago at his home in Allen, Texas. The caller asked whether he would support his alma mater's idea to jump to NCAA Division I athletics.

He said yes, enthusiastically.

The next question: Would he help pay for it?

"I was never a donor," Derdall said. "But I was a fan."

The call landed the Jackrabbits a $1,000 pledge they would not have received without the jump to Division I. The 1988 graduate plans to gradually contribute $10,000 toward athletic scholarships.

Now all SDSU needs is a few hundred more Chuck Derdalls. . . .

South Dakota State University's athletic budget is expected to almost double

during the next five years to $8.1 million.

That's about $1 million more than was projected a year ago as SDSU made plans to jump to Division I athletics. It's an increase school officials attribute in part to a state mandate to get universities in line with federal regulations for gender equity, known as Title IX. . . .

I've stepped up my donations to the Jackrabbit Fund. I'm also serously considering stepping up my donations to the academic side, too . . . partially because I can, and partially because of the D-I move.
