Jacks travel to Northern Iowa Open
BROOKINGS, S.D. —
South Dakota State will continue its season this Sunday at the Northern Iowa Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls and will featue some of the top competition in the Midwest. Nearly 300 wrestlers are expected to compete in the day-long event.
KAUFMAN-BRAND OPEN RECAP:
Nathan Althoff and Travis Gottschalk each placed in the top four of their respective weight classes in the 20-and under division to lead the South Dakota State University wrestling team at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 20 in Omaha, Neb. SDSU was idle during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Althoff, a sophomore from Watertown, finished second at 165 punds in the 20-and under division, losing by fall in 5 minutes, 32 seconds to Brandon Mason of Oklahoma State. Althoff advanced to the championship by defeating Brandon Browne of Nebraska, 10-6, as he finished the day with a 4-1 record. Gottschalk, a sophomore from Kimball, won his first three matches in the 174-pound weight class to advance to the semifinals. He opened with a 3-2 victory over Chet Slevin of Wyoming, then decisioned John Justice of Dana (Neb.), 3-0. In the quarterfinals, Gottschalk knocked off Nebraska’s Matt Farrell, 3-2, before dropping an 8-4 decision to Antione Love of Iowa Central Community College. In the consolation bracket, Gottschalk defeated Cody Foust of Nebraska, 3-2, then fell in the third-place rematch with Farrell by another 3-2 score. Brad Gregory, a sophomore from Glenwood, Iowa, also had a successful day on the mat for the Jackrabbits, compiling a 4-2 record in the 20-and-under 141-pound division. Combined, 10 Jackrabbit wrestlers went 15-19 in the 20-and-under division. In the open division, SDSU entered just three wrestlers and came away with just one victory as Cody Nehl won one match in the 197-pound weight class.
JACKS PINNING OPPONENTS:
The Jackrabbit wrestling team so far this season has recorded a combined pin total of 15 after the first three weekends of competition. Of the 15 pins, nine of them have come from sophomores Nathan Althoff, Andy Everson,Travis Gottschalk, Brad Gregory and Chris Werth. Freshman Dusty Kavitz leads the way for the Jackrabbits with four pins on the year. Fellow freshman Elliott Osterhoudt and junior Cody Nehl have both recorded two pins on the year.
GOTTSCHALK STRONG OUT OF THE GATE:
Travis Gottschalk, a sophomore from Kimball, Minn., followed up his impressive showing at the Harold Nichols Open, by going 4-2 in competition at the Kaufman-Brand open. Gottschalk has gone 10-6 in competi-tion so far this season, with two pins.
