Althoff places in top four at UNI Open
CEDAR FALLS, IA — Nathan Althoff placed fourth in the 165-pound weight class to lead the South Dakota State University wrestling team Sunday at the Northern Iowa Open.
Althoff, a sophomore from Watertown, lost a 6-5 decision to Nick Baima of Northern Iowa in the third-place match. Althoff advanced to the third-place match by defeating Anthony Castillo of Illinois, 3-1, as he finished the day with a 3-2 record.
Chad Herrboldt, a junior from Scotland, won his first two matches in the 149-pound weight class to advance to the quarterfinals. He opened with a 7-3 victory over Bob Kuennen of Wartburg, then decisioned Steve Ertl of Northern Iowa, 2-1. In the quarterfinals, Herrboldt was knocked off by second seeded Anton Dietzen of Illinois, 12-3, as he finished the day with a 2-2 record.
Combined, nine Jackrabbit wrestlers went 9-18 in their respective weight classes at the Northern Iowa Open.
The Jackrabbits will return home this week to open the dual season against the University of Mary (N.D.) on Thursday and Princeton (N.J.) on Friday. Start time for both contests is at 7 p.m. The University of Mary match will be wrestled in Frost Arena, while the Dec. 10 matchup against Princeton will be wrestled in the SDSU Intramural Building (The Barn). Princeton will wrestle Northern State at 4 p.m. on Dec. 10 before taking on the Jackrabbits.
