Match to take place in The Barn

South Dakota State's wrestling team is having a barn party on Friday.

Venturing back into the Jackrabbits' past athletic lore, the wrestlers will host Princeton for a dual meet at 7 p.m. in the Intramural Building, which is commonly known as The Barn. Before Frost Arena and the HPER Center existed, this was where many of SDSU's formative athletic moments happened.

"Obviously, we would rather wrestle in Frost Arena," said Coach Jason Liles. "But the way it worked out, it's going to be a unique event."

One that almost didn't happen. SDSU will host Mary (N.D.) for a dual meet today in Frost, but the Jackrabbits are required to abandon their usual home because the arena must be set up Friday for weekend graduation ceremonies.

That left few options. The Swiftel Center was booked for the Rainbow Game Systems holiday party. Liles then turned toward the Performing Arts Center on campus, with the idea of setting mats up on the stage. Center officials, who didn't want to hold an athletic event in the facility, nixed that plan.

Enter the grand old lady with the uber-South Dakota name. The Barn was built in 1918 and served as a gymnasium and multi-purpose facility until 1973, when Frost Arena opened. Matt Thorn, the athletic department's facilities manager, has arranged for portable bleachers and curtains to spruce up the old building for the competition, which also will include a dual between Princeton and Northern State at 4 p.m.

Liles said SDSU has wrestled 143 duals against Division I opponents in the program's history, winning 51 of them. Subtract traditional powerhouse programs such as Minnesota, Iowa and Iowa State from that total, and the Jacks have a winning percentage well above 50 percent that Liles credits to former coach Warren Williamson.

"They were wrestling those people on a regular basis," Liles said.

To help link the full-color Division I present to the grainy black-and-white past, Liles invited a number of ex-Jackrabbit wrestlers back for Friday's meet with Princeton, itself a storied Ivy League institution. He said at least 15 will return, but that even more phoned the coach and wished they could make it.

"It will be neat. They're all pumped up," Liles said. "It turned out to be a great option."

      Re: Princeton University

I am an SDSU wrestling fan going back to the 70's when I was 12-13 years old, when Rick Jensen and company ruled the mats my dad would take me to the SDSU matches. I want to go to the Princeton match so bad (but I can't) I love the idea of wrestling in the barn, is there any way that it could become the permanent home to Jacks wrestling? It just seems so fitting to wrestle in a old intimate gym like that.

I recall there was a rumor floating around a few years ago that there was thinking along these lines, of having the Barn revamped for wrestling and volleyball. It would create great, intimate setting for both sports. At best they were just rumors because of the costs to bring the Barn up to speed for use as a competition site. Does anyone know if the Barn is still used for classes or intramurals of any sort?

I believe it's still being used for classes, I don't know about intramural sports.  About 6 years ago I had a couple of classes in the building.  Plenty of people still go there for noon basketball and raquetball.  Is the weight room still in the basement?  Been awhile since I've seem the inside of a weightroom It's also used for baseball and softball practice when it's too cold to play outside. They used to have yearly concerts there. Can't remember the name of the band....Johnny something??

The Bison smoked Princeton last night, 29-6. I expect the Jacks to do the same.

                        Wrestlers Defeat Princeton 18-15

A pin at 125 was the difference as South Dakota State edged Princeton 18-15 in wrestling action Friday night.

Each team won five weights in the dual held in the Intramural Building (The Barn) on the SDSU campus, the first varsity athletic event in the facility since January, 1973. A crowd of 300 including a group of former Jackrabbit wrestlers who competed in The Barn watched the action.

The difference in the team score came in the second match of the night, when SDSU’s Marcus Waters pinned Princeton’s Audrey Pang in 29 seconds. That came after Princeton’s Kristopher Berr won a 2-1 overtime decision at heavyweight to start the action. That was one of three overtime victories for the Tigers, who went 1-3 on their trip to the Dakotas.

SDSU also had decisions by Chris Werth at 133, Chad Herrboldt at 149, Andy Everson at 157 and Nate Althoff at 165.

SDSU, 2-0 in duals, is now idle until the Oregon Classic on Friday, January 7.

Are the Jacks doing anything like NDSU this year, and redshirting everyone that they can(including Jr.'s and below that haven't redshirted) so they can compete in the tourney in 2006-2007?
