  • Feasibility of a new league

Does anybody know if we are going to put together a league for the other sports like we did for fb for the sake of scheduling. Even if there are no ncaa bids for a new league it would be fun to develop some rivalries with new schools. On the other hand the distances to some of those schools would make it tough to manage.
Also, what happens to our league if UNC does get accepted to the BSC? Is there any school out there that would be a possibility to join getting us back to 6 schools? Go Jacks!!

Re: Feasibility of a new league

There are six independents at present that could potentially form a new league. SDSU, NDSU, Utah Valley, IPFW, Corpus Christi and Pan American. there are also some new teams moving up such as Central Arkansas. The others, Longwood, and Savannah State probably are to remote and may have better options because of location.

My understanding is that a new league would get an automatic bid after having been established for a few years. But it would be quite a ways down the road as the new league must have, I beleive, six full division one schools for about four or five years before qualifying. However, exceptions have been granted in the recent past.

Conf. must have 7 member for basketball to receive an Auto Bid, football is 6.

Central Arkansas and USD (University of San Diego) have been talked about as potential new members of the Great West.

      Go State! ;D

Autobid for football is several years down the road. You need 6 playoff-eligible teams to qualify. Savannah State is still looking for a conference, I believe. It isn't beyond the realm of the possible that they might wind up in the GWFC (if they don't drop out of D-I first). I'd prefer to see Central Arkansas, though.

Basketball autobid? Well, never say never, but I'd say the chances are better that SDSU gets into the MVC than the "Independent's Alliance" would get an autobid.

The auto-bid needs to be forgot about, first is a league, then let things take care of themself. In most cases a playoff-eligible team will get seen regardless of league they are in.

Plus who knows, the ind teams get together could be a strong league. Which in turn teams may get more PR due to the novelty and new-ness of it all. Everyone loves a underdog.

I think Cal-Poly would argue that statement vehemently!

Cal-Poly hurt themselves with two losses in last 4 games. If they would have won one or both of them I feel they would have been in.

What hurt Poly the most was not having a Great West representative on the playoff committee.

I agree, form a new conference first. Then later, try to get an autobid or try to find a new conference.

Playing two provisional I-AA opponents that counted as DII opponents is what hurt Cal-Poly's chances at being selected. Lehigh and Cal-Poly were competing for the same playoff spot. Lehigh did not play any provisional I-AA schools and was selected for the at-large spot.

Stop with all the logical thinking or we won't welcome you here anymore! The GWC got screwed (at least I feel better thinking about it that way).
