    Jackrabbits travel to Oregon Classic

    BROOKINGS, S.D. —
    After a four-week layoff from competition, the South Dakota State University wrestling team returns to action Friday at the Oregon Classic duals tournament. The Jackrabbits, 2-0 in duals this season, are expected to wrestle three duals against
    Division I opponents in Friday’ s day-long competiton held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond, Ore., although pairings have yet to be announced. A high school tournament will be held in conjunction with the collegiate tournament.
    SDSU is expected to wrestle shorthanded at the Oregon Classic, with the 133-pound and heavyweight classes open due to illness and injuries.

    OPENING DUALS RECAP:

    The Jackrabbits recorded a pair of home victories to open the 2004-05 dual season.

    SDSU 30, University of Mary (N.D.) 15
    The Jackrabbits opened the dual season with a 30-15 victory over the University of Mary Dec. 9 at Frost Arena.
    SDSU won seven weights, including a pin by Travis Gottschalk at 174 pounds. SDSU also picked up a forfeit at 125 and had major decisions by Andy Everson at 157, Cody Nehl at 197 and Chris Werth at 133 pounds.
    Other winners for the Jackrabbits included Nate Althoff at 165 pounds and 149-pounder Chad Herrboldt, who both won by decision.

    SDSU 18, Princeton (N.J.) 15
    A pin at 125 was the difference as South Dakota State edged Princeton 18-15 in wrestling action Dec. 10.
    Each team won five weights in the dual held in the Intramur al Building (The Barn) on the SDSU campus, the first varsity athletic event in the facility since January 1973. A crowd of 300, including a group of former Jackrabbit wrestlers who competed in The Barn,
    watched the action.
    The difference in the team score came in the second match of the night, when SDSU’s Marcus Waters pinned Princeton’s Audrey Pang in 29 seconds.That came after Princeton’s Kristopher Berr won a 2-1 overtime decision at heavyweight to start the action.That was one of three overtime victories for the Tigers , who went 1-3 on their trip to the Dakotas. SDSU also had decisions by Chris Werth at 133, Chad Herrboldt at 149, A n dy Everson at 157 and Nate Althoff at 165.

    Lots of High School wrestling, could be a great scouting trip for Coach Liles and company. 69 HS teams in three divisions (8 college teams will wrestle there also).

        The Jackrabbits are scheduled to wrestle three matches (all times Pacific Time):
        • vs. Oregon, 12:30 p.m.
        • vs. Pacific (Calif.), 2:30 p.m.
        • vs. Portland State (Ore.), 4:30 p.m.

        Should be done by now, I wonder how they did?

          They guys did alright with such a young team, picked up another D-I victory and where one match away from getting 2 out of three.

          SDSU wrestlers go 1-2 at Oregon Classic Duals
          REDMOND, Ore. -- The South Dakota State University wrestling team defeated Portland State (Ore.) 29-20 Friday to finish the Oregon Classic Duals with a 1-2 record.

          The Jackrabbits, who moved to 3-2 on the season, opened the day-long tournament against Division I competition with a 34-12 defeat at the hands of the University of Oregon. In the second match of the day, the University of Pacific (Calif.) won a decision in the final match of the dual at 133 pounds to claim a 22-20 victory over SDSU. . . .

          The Jackrabbits return to action Jan. 14-15 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.

            This is another sport that we just happen to be rebuilding in our first year in DI. I can think of some past teams where we'd have maybe taken all three of these.

              This is fact. The bad timing has hurt the wrestlers record against DI schools. We'll be back.

                Wrestling is one sport where our geography actually helps us, There are a ton of talented wrestlers in the Dakotas, Minnesota and Iowa for us to recruit. Both NDSU and SDSU should be top 25 wrestling programs in the next 3-5 years.

                      Thanks- if our streak doesn't end at Duke, it probably won't last through the Virginia Duals

                        Both SDSU and NDSU will be there, NDSU is wrestling some big name schools while SDSU will be in the small college tournament. Also a big high school tournament which could help in recruitment.

                            The Peninsula Wrestling Association will once again host the 25th Annual Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament at the Hampton Coliseum on January 14 & 15, 2005. The team advancement concept started in Hampton, Virginia with the Virginia Duals in 1981 and is now used by Virginia and many other states to determine the best High School Team in the state. The National College Wrestling Coaches Association also recognized the value of the Team Advancement concept and now has the National Dual Team Championships to recognize the best college team in the nation. The Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament is the largest College and High School Tournament in the world.

                            Virginia Duals


                            In the B bracket South Dakota State vs. Millersville 11:00am Fri on mat 6. If they win they take on the McDaniel/Davidson winner on Sat at 2 pm, if lost then wrestle the losser at 1pm on Fri

                            SDSU is second seed behind Davidson


                            UPDATE South Dakota State defeated Millersville (Pa.) 21-19 in the opening round of the Virginia Duals Friday morning. The Jackrabbits meet Davidson (N.C.) in semifinal action of the American division at 2 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. Central) Saturday.


                            As for NDSU
                            North Dakota State University vs. Rider University 9 am on Fri and are in same bracket as  Cal-State Bakersfield and University of Buffalo
