  • A non-sports question about South Dakota

I was wondering about something about South Dakota.

What is everyone's thoughts on the Crazy Horse Memorial that's near Mt. Rushmore? I'll be long dead before it gets finished. Heck, it'll be done the same year the Cubs win the World Series.

It's a very long way from being done, I'm 38, doubt I will ever see it completed.
I know a lot of money is made on admission to "watch" them work on it.

Don't know much about it and frankly, don't care much about it. That means no disrespect to the Chief. Who's idea was it anyways?

A great idea to a great man, original plan is to include a college and museum. Was to be finished by now (originally). I remember in grade school in the 70's reading about, boy the 2000 years seem very far away.

From my understanding progress will be slow as long as donations keep pouring in. Seems there are politics involved also.

Ah, politics! : Without that, a lot more things (in general) would get done such as Iraq, a Division I-A playoff, NHL lockout, etc...

I just turned 31 on the 8th! I agree. I'll never see it completed.

Has the state legisulature (sp?) donated any money or ANYTHING at all to the project?

So, no state money? In that case, it'll be about 100+ years before the memorial gets done.

Does anyone in the state care if it ever gets done? No offense to the Native Americans. But, this project will take several more decades to finish!

I have major respect for the Indians (or Native Americans). Especially after what the white man did to their culture and livihood in the past 200+ years! It's was led to my bachelor's degree in History.

My understanding is that they don't want any govt money and the strings that are attached to it.

Re: A non-sports question about South Dakota

My last visit to this on going monument, I recall seeing box of stones and a sign appeared "Free samples Help Your self" which I did  and next thing I see is some guy with a real frosty stare looking straight at me. I think he was expecting me to put a few bucks in the kitty. So goes it at Crazy Horse. Its was a great idea of having a college and a museum, but most of the Reservations in SD are in the process of developing community and full college corriculums so you wonder how this orignal plan of a college will now fit?  Also SDSU has lent a great deal assistance in developing these schools.

As far as I can recall, I dont think the fed or even the state park systems have taken any interest in the completion of this project and I think Cal Jack is right the family whose name I can not spell or pronounce, seem to find the funds to keep on going and would not like any kind of interference from the gov.

From what I have heard about this family, they are very independant thinkers. The papa was a real idealist from what others have said, and maybe at times lacked the drive to support his ideas. He spend a number of afternoons cooling off in a RC hotel bar.

The Crazy Horse monument is an extremely ambitious project. It's a more ambitious project than was Mount Rushmore, and it has a lot less resources, so it will take a very, very long time to finish.

Korczak Ziolkowski, born in Boston, sculptor of some note. Died in 1982.

                        Why no government funding?

Here's the answer on the Crazy Horse Web site:

"Korczak believed that if the public accepted the goals of Crazy Horse Memorial, they would support it financially. He believed in individual initiative and private enterprise. Korczak wanted to ensure the long range goals of the Memorial, not just the mountain carving."

It's a non-profit organization. They took in $4.2 million in 2003, spent $1.9 million and have $33 million in assets. They have a cultural center, a conference center, etc., and host lots of educational events including minority student workshops, etc.

I heard that there are quite a few Native Americans against the carving, because the Black Hills are a holy ground for them. They didn't like Mount Rushmore, and they don't like Crazy Horse. That's not all Native Americans but I learned in my Native American class there are quite a few that don't like what is going on.

I've heard about that years ago. I'm not surprised by it.
