    Track Teams Host Meet Saturday

    MADISON, Wis. - Track and field fans will get an even closer look at the UW men’s and women’s teams as the Badgers host the Wisconsin Elite Invitational on Saturday in the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center (The Shell), 1420 Monroe St. Field events start at 11:30 a.m. with running events beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free.

    Wisconsin will take on Illinois State, Indiana State and South Dakota State in the nonscored coed meet. The meet is the second and last home event for the Badgers this indoor season. . . .

    Zempel third in hurdles at Wisconsin
    MADISON, Wis. -- Erin Zempel placed third in 60-meter hurdles and Cameryn Christion and Michelle Carter each turned in a pair of top-six performances as the South Dakota State University women's indoor track and field team competed Saturday at the Wisconsin Elite Classic.

    Zempel, a junior from Lamberton, Minn., shaved .02 seconds off her time in the preliminaries to finish with a time of 9.08 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle finals.

    Carter, a junior from Yankton, had a pair of strong showings in the throwing events. She placed fourth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 44 feet, 6 3/4 inches and was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 43-7 1/4.

    Christion, a freshman from Parker, continued to fare in the sprints, placing fifth in the 60-meter dash, 7.89 seconds, and sixth in the 200-meter dash, 25.86 seconds.

    Another freshman, Shannon Hattervig, clocked a fourth-place time of 2 minutes, 20.29 seconds in the 800 meters, while Becka Mansheim was fifth in the 3,000-meter run in 10:31.59. Sheena Dauer added a sixth-place effort in the mile run, 5:09.19.

    Rounding out the Jackrabbit effort was Jona Kulesza, who placed sixth in the triple jump, 35-1 3/4.

    No team scores were kept in the meet, which also included competitors from Wisconsin, Illinois State and Indiana State.

    SDSU returns to action Jan. 29 at the John Dalton Invitational in Vermillion.

      Lowery leads SDSU men at Wisconsin
      MADISON, Wis. -- Brad Lowery turned in a third-place finish in the mile run to lead the South Dakota State University men's indoor track and field team Saturday at the Wisconsin Elite Invitational.

      Lowery, a senior from Pierre, clocked a time of 4 minutes, 6.09 seconds to finish less than a second behind winner Chris Solinsky of Wisconsin (4:05.19) and Ryan Kleimenhagen of Wisconsin-Platteville (4:05.85).

      Senior Ben Johnson added a fourth-place effort in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 8.44 seconds. Craig Hill, a La Crosse, Wis., native, contributed a sixth-place time of 7.18 seconds in the 60-meter dash.

      In the field events, Matt Olsen and Jared Schwader each had fifth-place performances. Olsen leaped 44 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the triple jump, while Schwader tossed the shot put 49 feet, 3 inches.

      The Jackrabbits return to competition Jan. 29 at the John Dalton Invitational in Vermillion.
