    Re: Poorly informed USD Writer

Anyone care to critique the "Letter to the editor" in the Argus today?

Well, he could have been more eloquent but the sentiment is pretty clear. I don't know if you win over too many otherwise uninterested people by using phrases like "our great SDSU" in letters to the editor, but I pretty much agree with the sentiment.

The D-I move is about more than just athletics, it's about raising the level of the entire university nationally - academics, research, athletics, it's all part of it.

And, the SD-can't-compete-and-we-shouldn't-even-try argument is exceedingly tedious.

I thought the letter summed up the fact this is not purely about athletics.

I think this young man is expressing the view that may be very predominate in the USD community of students, faculty, alumni, and coaches. They care but they dont care. They can't make up their minds and feel helpless that SDSU has moved on.

If USD were making a parallel move to D1, this conversations would be about matching and exceeding SDSU. That is not reality so we get these contradictory comments out of young and maybe bright student who has emotional ties to USD.

I think we all agree by and large that progress has been made all ready in the D1 move, and we did not rush into this move. Three studies I believe open forums for all to voice opininions. What more could have been done? ???

Nearly exactly the way USD supporters are feeling. Helpless might not quite be right, I would favor jealous. USD and the NCC were much better off with SDSU, NDSU, and UNC. The sense of loss with the move to DI is pervasive at USD. The consequence, defensive attitudes regarding their current status and an ego-protecting desire to see SDSU struggle. I would say this is typical of USD and its supporters.

I think you're right. I suspect I might feel like that if the situation was reversed.

I don't think the average USD supporter is jealous of SDSU, YET. If things turn out for us the way we all hope they do, then I think the USD supporters will be jealous. Right now I think that they feel we are making a mistake and they are glad to be in DII. However, in 10 years if we are in a conference and going to the Big Dance, then I think the USD supporters will be jealous.
I do think that they are upset at us. Us leaving has obviously made the NCC weaker, not to mention it has ended the state's biggest rivalry. I do think they resent us for doing that and therefore many may want us to fail. I don't want to catergorize all USD supporters that way, I do know many who hope more than ever that we succeed, now that they aren't competing with us.

                      SDsportsFan,

You seem very in tune to the USD scene for a SDSU fan. What is your connection? Did you go to school there at one point, grow up in Vermillion, something like that? Just wondering.

                      Go State! ;D

I have friends who went to USD as I'm sure many of you do and I have relatives that go to school there. They keep me well informed of whats going on. Plus I just try to stay intune to the athletics in all the schools in the state. I have connections at NSU as well that let me know whats going on with their scene as well. Don't hold any of this against me.

I will respectfully disagree. As proof I will offer up a portion of Mr. Hoeck's letter. In it he writes:

"In my opinion, SDSU's move to Division I athletics has been getting far too much exposure from news organizations in the state - including the Argus Leader. Why publicize the university's ill-fated plunge? Why not give USD its due?"

He is clearly jealous of the exposure that we are receiving, and he is not alone. I won't say that all USD fans are jealous, I know of some whom I believe honestly wish us well. However, anecdotally, it seems that the majority may be.

                          Go State! ;D

                            Re: Poorly informed USD Writer

Just another classic example of someone being unable to see the forest because of the trees.

It's just not fair to judge someone's success after a single chance.  Does he expect someone to become a millionaire overnight?  It takes time to become successful (and honestly, we've exceeded expectations by a country mile thus far in our transition) and every team we knock off gives our school and state more relevance and credibility.

Sorry USD, but we're here to stay.  You may still be the 'U', but we've moved on.  You can either continue to pout and wallow around in the D-II ranks, cursing us for making progress but shaming the state at the same time (in your eyes at least), or you can live with your reduced status.  Or better yet, grow some balls and join us as our top rival again.

I think I would have to agree with SDsports on this one. I may offend OK with this statement , but did you ever think of the Collegian's editor as an "average" Jack's fan?
