Six Jacks win titles at John Dalton Open
VERMILLION -- Six South Dakota State University track and field athletes claimed individual titles as the Jackrabbits resumed indoor competition Saturday at the John Dalton Open at the DakotaDome.
The Jackrabbit men were led by field event winners Jared Schwader and Matt Olsen, as well as hurdler Ben Johnson and distance runner Eric Hansen.
Schwader continued his strong season by winning the shot put with a top throw of 50 feet, 5 1/2 inches, bettering his previous season best by more than a foot. He also earned a fourth-place finish in the 35-pound weight throw with another season-best toss of 45-11.
Olsen, a sophomore from Canton, nearly swept the jumping events as he won the triple jump with a top effort of 44-4 1/2, while placing second in the long jump with a leap of 21-2 1/4. Teammate Cameron Johnson was third in the long jump at 21-1 3/4.
Ben Johnson took the 60-meter hurdles title for the second time in three meets, establishing a new season-best time in finals with a winning time of 8.37 seconds. Freshman teammates Nick Schanaman and Jacob Schanaman were third and fourth with respective times of 8.67 and 8.82 seconds.
Hansen rounded out the Jackrabbit victories on the men’s side, winning the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8 minutes, 56.27 seconds.
In women’s competition, Michelle Carter and Jona Kulesza earned titles for the Jackrabbits.
Carter, a junior from Yankton, made it a Jackrabbit sweep in the shot put, winning with a top throw of 43-7 1/4.
A junior from Rapid City, Kulesza won the triple jump with a 37-foot effort and was second in the long jump at 16-9 3/4.
Freshman Cameryn Christion recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the sprints. The Parker native clocked second-place times of 7.92 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 25.90 seconds in the 200 meters.
Also turning in runner-up finishes were Krystie Ratzlaff in the mile run, 5:22.06, and Erin Zempel in the 60-meter hurdles, 9.03 seconds. Ashley Adams placed third in the 800-meter run in 2:23.99 and freshman Kari Schaefer was third in the mile run, 5:37.12.
The Jackrabbits return to action Feb. 4-5 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
