UNI Takes to the Road For Duals against North Dakota State and South Dakota State
THIS WEEK
The University of Northern Iowa wrestling squad travels to the Dakotas Thursday to square off with North Dakota State and South Dakota State on Friday.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
UNI is 5-7 overall this season and has wrestled nine teams in the top 20. The Panthers will look to build momentum this weekend as they near the West Regionals on March 5th. Last weekend against Northern Illinois, the Panthers struck early, winning four out of the first five matches and six overall on their way to a 23-17 win.
Seniors Jeff Harrison, Eric Hauan and Sean Stender lead the Panthers in many ways. All three are ranked in the top 10 of Intermat's poll and account for 46 percent of UNI's dual wins. Harrison (22-5, 9-3) has won his last 12-of-13 matches at 149 pounds and secured three wins at the National Duals. Two-time all-American Stender (25-6, 8-3) is ranked sixth at 197 pounds. Senior Hauan picked up his 100th victory in a Panther singlet on Jan. 15 against Cyclone Nick Passolano. Hauan (24-6, 9-3) now is 102-33 in his career.
Juniors Chris Helgeson (125) and Chris Bitetto (157) and sophomore Baima (165) are the other returning NCAA qualifiers in the Panthers' starting lineup. Baima and Stender lead the team in wins with 25 a piece while Hauan is one shy.
SCOUTING THE JACKRABBITS
South Dakota State University will look to stay on track against the Panthers after a big win at home against Southwest Minnesota State, 21-15. SDSU is 7-5 on the season with two losses to eventual UNI opponents at the West Regional - Air Force and Wyoming. The Jackrabbits went undefeated at the Virginia duals, garnering wins over Millersville (Pa.), Davidson (N.C.) and Duquesne (Pa.).
The Jackrabbits are also making the move to the Division I ranks this season. With the help of all-Americans Jeremy Roe and Nate Althoff in the lineup, SDSU is making the transition as smooth as possible. . . .
Go Jackrabbits, beat the Panthers! ;D
