  • THE BARN

Does anyone out there know how much use The Barn gets for academic use? I am sure it is a long shot, but would it be possible to convert the barn into something more practical. Some ideas would to convert into classrooms/ labs to be used for academic use. Or give it to athletics for the possiblity of a more complete indoor practice facility for football, soccer with turf or maybe use it for indoor track. Or thirdly why not convert it into a student recreation center. I know their is alot of history with the Barn, but progress is important. Not sure if it is feasible or not. Just wondering if converting the barn is something that had been looked into for other uses. Sorry to affend all the noon ballers at the Barn.

    Re: THE BARN

I think we've covered this a while back...I believe the barn is still being used for academic purposes. There were 2 or 3 classrooms on the east end, as well as the weight room in the basebment which was/is used for wellness classes (as well as the main gym area). The baseball and softball teams practice inside the barn when they can't play outside. Intramurals--don't know how much bball is played there but do believe intramural raquetball is played there. The barn is serving a purpose, although it may be in need of some updates. It's usually always open to shoot around and the weight room (although outdated) is also usually open. The HPER is pretty tied up with all the varsity sports so it's pretty tough to get on the court on in the wieght room. I spent a lot of time in the barn while I was there, my roomate and I enjoyed having the freedom to come whenever we pleased and not having to worry about waiting around for a court or machine to open.

In comparison, USD's has the dome, but that's it. 1 weight room, and 2 basketball courts. It's even tougher to find a place to play down there. It would be nice to see the barn renovated though.

I agree, however Barn rennovation is probably not a huge priority right now. My ultimate Barn senario is to completely rennovate it as an athletic facility. with new floors, seating, scoreboards, modernization. and use it for wrestling and volleyball. It would be a great venue for athletic events that draw less than 2000 fans. Also compeletly rennovate the basement weight room. Again, this is "pie in the sky thinking" on my part. Many large universities have two arenas for athletic events.

I would also like to see The Barn renovated as a wrestling and volleyball facility. Down the road it wouldn't surprise me, we already had a wrestling match there this year. Something similar to Penn State's Rec Hall (http://www.gopsusports.com/Volleybal...es/rechall.cfm) would be pretty awesome. However, before The Barn is renovated I would rather see Coughlin renovated and more done to Frost. The new wellness center would also have to be built to accomodate the intramural sports. As long as we're talking about "pie in the sky" thinking, I would open up the basement and make the seating bowl top entry from ground level and have a mezzanine surrounding the seats. I love the historical significance of The Barn and hope to see it used for athletics again.

Ditto here, can't even begin to count the number of pick-up games I played. I wonder if Dennis is still around?

As for sporting events at the barn, parking is a problem. Not that it can't be overcome, it is a problem.

Couldn't you just use the parking lot at Coughlin?

Too bad we spent a bunch of money on the worthwhile renovation of the presidents house. We could of spent the money on something that would actually benefit the students on the campus. Just a thought.

Couldn't disagree with you more. The Woodbine Cottage has major historic importance to SDSU.  Maybe you should pick up a copy of The College on the Hill and read chapter 17. Woodbine has been the home of SDSU Presidents since it was built in 1887 by the second President of SDSU, Lewis McLouth.

                      Re: THE BARN

President Miller and spouse have purchased another residence and probably will not be living much at Woodbine. This home is used for a number of social functions and receptions so it does have a genuine purpose besides its legacy.

It kind of hard to say what should be done with the SDSC Fieldhouse or Intramural Bldg as it should be called. I think with more and more students, the need for wellness facilites will continue and granted some improvements could be made and will be made. Let the pickup games continue ;D

I believe they purchased a home on the Volga golf course.

                          Re: THE BARN

I appreciate the historicalness of Woodbine cottage as much as anyone, however, as a student I have seen some other buildings on campus that are in bad shape or classrooms that are not very condusive to educating students. I would have like to seen the money for woodbine to come from somewhere else, like a Historic preservation society not a fund generated by student fees for building maintenace. That money should be used for the greater of the student body, not a very select minority of students.
As for the barn, can anyone tell me the seating capacity of the barn back in its day? Also where, was old State Field?

That money did not come from student fees, it came from the SDSU Foundation and represents alums who gracefully donate for this purpose. A Historical society may already donated funds for this purpose, I am not sure.

The Barn seating capacity was between 3000 to 3500 and Old State Field is now the track call Sexauer Field
The few rows of bleachers are the old bleachers from State Field as is the small press box.

The money for woodbine came directly from student fees.
