  • Sioux Falls - Fargo

Over on the Bison discussion board there is a discussion on the relative sizes of Sioux Falls and Fargo. For some reason, I can't get logged in on their board but here are some links to official data that gives the answers.

For the federally defined metorpolitan areas for the two, Sioux Falls ranks 201 and Fargo 215 as of 2002. Sioux Falls Metro is about 10% bigger even including the Minnesota part of the Fargo metro.

For rate of growth, the following graphic shows and the above table both show Sioux Falls metro growing much more rapidly

I believe that the Fargo Metro had a larger population in 1990 but Sioux Falls passed Fargo before 2000 an the difference is getting bigger as shown by the tables.

Someone who is registered over on the Bison Board might want to transfer this information to thier thread. It is under Bison commons and the topic is something like Fargo may be over 100,000 pop.

            Re: Sioux Falls - Fargo

The ProximityOne numbers are actually obsolete. Sioux Falls MSA added Turner and McCook counties in 2003 (I think) so it's a four-county metro now.

            Fargo/Moorhead, 2000 census: 174,367
            Sioux Falls, 2000 census: 187,093

            F/M, 2003 estimate (Cass, Clay co's) 179,121
SF, 2003 est. (Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner, McCook) 198,377

            (numbers from US Census Bureau)

Other interesting numbers include the Nielsen television market size.

              http://www.nielsenmedia.com/DMAs.html

              Sioux Falls is #116, with 242,930 TV homes;
Fargo-Valley City is #118, with 235,490 TV homes.

So, the two cities measured by their media markets are almost identical in size, (and food for thought, almost exactly the same size as Boise at #122 . . . )

                Re: Sioux Falls - Fargo

Someone over on Bison Board was asking why SDSU in Brookings is concerned with what is hppening in the city of Sioux Falls 60 miles away. If NDSU was in Jamestown they would understand. The continued rapid growth of Sioux Falls is influencing what is happening on the SDSU campus in many ways such as enrollment, donations, advertising, attendence at athletic events to name a few.

I took a peek at that thread over in Bisonville . . .

                  My take . . .

"Those of you who think you know everything are annoying those of us who do."

The antagonist over there claims to be something of a demographer . . . I'm just a guy with an MS in geography, a BS in civil engineering and an MBA, so I'll just go ahead and defer to his superior wisdom . . .

We were talking with some developers and city reps yesterday and the SF metro area now exceeds 200K.
