Jacks swept on softball opening day
      http://www.gojacks.com/
ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The South Dakota State University softball team opened the 2005 season Friday with a pair of losses at the St. Cloud State Classic.

The Jackrabbits opened the day with a 3-2, eight-inning loss to Minnesota State, Mankato, then was downed 6-2 by Washburn (Kan.) later in the day.

In the opener, Minnesota State scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 3-2 victory.

The Jackrabbits were held off the board until the top of the seventh as they pushed across a run to tie the game at 1-1. With two outs and Bobbie Jo Mitchell on first base after reaching on a fielder’s choice, newcomer Kassy Hernandez prolonged the inning with an infield single. Amy Wittgenstein followed with a base hit to plate Mitchell with the tying run.

With the international tie-breaker in place for extra innings, Chris Pesquiera opened the inning on second base and came around to score on an infield single by Ali Adair.

Minnesota State rallied in the bottom half of the inning as former Jackrabbit Mandi Geis doubled in the first run and Shannon Dittman delivered the winning run with her third hit of the day.

Freshman pitcher Kim Westendorf took the loss in a complete-game effort despite not allowing an earned run. The Mankato native yielded nine hits, but struck out nine and did not walk a batter in her collegiate debut.
Maverick hurler Janet Barker struck out nine and walked two as she went the distance for her second win of the season as MSU improved to 4-3.

Senior Ashley Kalina had two of SDSU's seven hits.
In the second game of the day, the Jackrabbits took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but Washburn scored five unanswered runs to take a 6-2 victory.

Kalina and Adair each had run-scoring singles in the inning. Kalina ended the game 2-for-4 at the plate to lead SDSU’s six-hit attack.

Jordan Bottorff took the loss as she worked the first six innings before giving way to Westendorf in the seventh. The Jackrabbit defense committed five errors.

The Jackrabbits return to tournament action Saturday with three games at the Husky Stadium Dome. SDSU is scheduled to play Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) at noon, followed by games against Upper Iowa at 4 p.m. and Missouri Western State at 6 p.m.
