    ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The South Dakota State University women's swimmers set their third relay school record and Heather Youngberg set a new mark in the 200-yard freestyle during competition Friday at the National Independent Conference Championships.

    The Jackrabbits closed Friday's evening session with a school record in the 400 medley relay. The SDSU team of Mariah Pavlicek, Kim Iverson, Chelsea Colborn and Youngberg clocked a time of 4:06.61, nearly five seconds better than the previous record set last season. SDSU also has posted record times in the 800 freestyle and 200 medley relays during the championships.

    A freshman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Youngberg lowered her record time in the 200 freestyle to 2:00.93 in Friday morning's preliminaries, improving by .02 seconds from her record time set Wednesday as she led off the Jackrabbits' record-setting 800 freestyle relay. Youngberg placed 11th in the consolation finals Friday night with a time of 2:01.22.

    Freshman Catie Coursen was the top individual finisher for SDSU on Friday, placing fourth in the 400 individual medley in a time of 5:26.74.

    Sophomore Mariah Pavlicek qualified for the finals of the 100 backstroke, finishing seventh with a season-best time of 1:00.59.

    Chelsea Colborn and Jane Tschetter added ninth-place finishes. Colborn turned in a season-best time of 1:01.18 in the 100 butterfly, while Tschetter posted a time of 1:13.68 in the 100 breaststroke. Teammate Kim Iverson was 10th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.99, after posting a season-best mark of 1:13.25 in the prelims.

    Host Oakland University maintained its team lead with 698 points. North Florida is second with 590 points, followed by SDSU at 287.

    In men's action Friday, Adam Pick turned in the highest finish by a Jackrabbit with a sixth-place effort in the 100 backstroke. A senior from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Pick posted a season-best time of 58.93 seconds. Jason Kassa was seventh in :59.78.

    Two other Jackrabbits collected top-10 finishes: newcomer Wayne Schafer with a season-best time of 52.90 seconds in the 100 butterfly to place 10th, and Brandon Maydew in the 100 breaststroke with a 10th-place time of 1:02.38.

    Justin Manning matched his season-best time from the preliminaries of 1:48.73 in the finals to place 11th in the 200 freestyle.

    Southern Methodist (Texas) leads the four-team field with 675.5 points, followed by Hawaii at 525.5. Host Oakland is third with 428 points, with SDSU in fourth with 198 points.

    The championships conclude Saturday at the Oakland University Aquatics Center.

    ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Mariah Pavlicek broke her own school record in the 200-yard individual medley Thursday as the South Dakota State University women's swimming and diving team competed in the first full day of competition at the National Independent Conference Championships.

    A sophomore from Bettendorf, Iowa, Pavlicek posted an SDSU-record time of 2 minutes, 14.61 seconds in Thursday night's finals en route to a 10th-place finish. She shaved .23 seconds off her previous record, which was set at the 2004 North Central Conference Championships.

    Pavlicek's mark was the fourth school record set by the Jackrabbit women during the meet. In limited competition Wednesday, SDSU set records in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relay, while freshman Heather Youngberg's leadoff leg of the 800 relay established a new mark in the 200 freestyle at 2:00.95.

    In other women's competition Thursday, freshman Chelsea Colborn was the highest Jackrabbit finisher in the swimming events, placing eighth in the 500 freestyle, 5:26.08. Youngberg added a 10th-place effort in the 50 freestyle, finishing in a time of 25.87 seconds.

    Rachel Stenzel contributed a fifth-place score of 148.35 points in the 1-meter diving competition.

    Host Oakland leads the three-team meet with 359 points. North Florida is second with 292 points, followed by the Jackrabbits with 172.

    On the men's side, SDSU ranks a distant fourth among four teams. Southern Methodist leads the way with 347.5 points, with Hawaii in second at 284.5. Oakland is third with 214 points, followed by SDSU with 88.

    Justin Manning paced the Jackrabbit men with a ninth-place finish in the 500 freestyle, posting a season-best time of 4:56.99. Teammate Adam Pick was 10th in 5:15.57.

    The meet continues Friday and wraps up Saturday.
