SDSU wins Division I softball opener
MARIETTA, Ga. -- South Dakota State rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Boston University (Mass.) 5-4 in opening round action Friday at the Buzz Classic.

The Jackrabbits, 5-2 overall, who were playing their first game against a Division I opponent, overcame a dominating pitching performance in which Terrier hurler Brittany Detwiler struck out 15. Detwiler recorded strikeouts for the first eight outs.

BU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first off Jackrabbit starter Kim Westendorf. DeKenya Williams drove in the first run with a base hit and Erin McDonald followed with a two-run home run.

The Terriers added another run in the second inning as Westendorf walked leadoff batter Brandi Shields, who moved to second on a passed ball and later scored on base hit by Tyler Benson off Jackrabbit reliever Jordan Bottorff.

Bottorff held BU in check the rest of the way as she worked around four walks and three hits. She allowed just one hit in the final four innings as she evened her record at 1-1 this season.

The SDSU rally came in the top of the fifth as the Jackrabbits were helped out by a BU miscue. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tessie Winterton's ground ball was fielded but the throw to get her at first base was errant, allowing Kassy Hernandez, Lindsay Reiter and Ashley Kalina all to score. Ali Adair then followed with a single to center field to score Winterton from third and tie the game at 4-4.

The Jackrabbits took the lead in the sixth as Chris Pesquiera led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. After Hernandez struck out, freshman Kiley Schwedhelm doubled to center field to move Pesquiera to third. Pesquiera scored the winning run as she was safe on a play at the plate on a ground ball off the bat of Amy Wittgenstein.

Six different players accounted for the Jackrabbits' six hits. Williams was 2-for-3 for BU.
