    SDSU winning streak reaches five
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Freshman pitcher Kim Westendorf fired a two-hitter as the South Dakota State University softball team claimed its fifth-consecutive victory with a 2-1 win over Bellarmine (Ky.) in action Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games.

The Jackrabbits, 10-5 overall, had their second game of the day, against Central Missouri State, rained out. That game is not expected to be rescheduled.

Trailing 1-0 after Bellarmine scored in the bottom of the sixth, the Jackrabbits rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh. Kassy Hernandez opened the inning with a base hit. Pinch-runner Teresa Howell moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Kiley Schwedhlem and moved to third on a passed ball. Howell later scored on another passed ball on ball-four to Amy Wittgenstein.

Ashley Kalina plated pinch-runner Lindsay Reiter with the winning run later in the inning.

Westendorf struck out seven in a complete-game effort to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Hernandez and Tessie Winterton each had two of the Jackrabbits' six hits.

Following a off-day Thursday, the Jackrabbits return to action at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday with matchups against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Northern Kentucky. [hr]

Jackrabbit softball runs streak to four
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- For the second straight day, the South Dakota State University softball team swept a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games.

Tuesday, the Jackrabbits improved to 9-5 overall and moved to 4-0 at the Rebel Spring Games, with victories over Findlay (Ohio) and Dowling (N.Y.).

    SDSU 3, Findlay (Ohio) 1
Freshmen pitchers Kiley Schwedhelm and Kim Westendorf combined on a two-hitter as the Jackrabbits opened the day with a 3-1 victory over Findlay (Ohio).

After the Oilers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an unearned run, SDSU took the lead in the fourth. Ali Adair reached on a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steph Kuhl and reached third on a base hit by Bobbie Jo Mitchell. Following a stolen base by Mitchell, Kassy Hernandez drove in both runners with a base hit.

Kuhl tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, driving in Ashley Kalina with a base hit.

Schwedhelm struck out four batters in five innings of work to improve to 3-0 overall. Westendorf notched five strikeouts among the six outs she recorded in earning her second save in as many days.

    SDSU 15, Dowling (N.Y.) 7 (6 inn.)
Kassy Hernandez was 2-for-5 and tallied six runs batted in with a pair of bases-clearing doubles as the Jackrabbits won in six innings by a 15-7 margin over Dowling (N.Y.).
