SDSU winning streak reaches five
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Freshman pitcher Kim Westendorf fired a two-hitter as the South Dakota State University softball team claimed its fifth-consecutive victory with a 2-1 win over Bellarmine (Ky.) in action Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Jackrabbits, 10-5 overall, had their second game of the day, against Central Missouri State, rained out. That game is not expected to be rescheduled.
Trailing 1-0 after Bellarmine scored in the bottom of the sixth, the Jackrabbits rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh. Kassy Hernandez opened the inning with a base hit. Pinch-runner Teresa Howell moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Kiley Schwedhlem and moved to third on a passed ball. Howell later scored on another passed ball on ball-four to Amy Wittgenstein.
Ashley Kalina plated pinch-runner Lindsay Reiter with the winning run later in the inning.
Westendorf struck out seven in a complete-game effort to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Hernandez and Tessie Winterton each had two of the Jackrabbits' six hits.
Following a off-day Thursday, the Jackrabbits return to action at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday with matchups against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Northern Kentucky. [hr]

Jackrabbit softball runs streak to four
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- For the second straight day, the South Dakota State University softball team swept a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games.
Tuesday, the Jackrabbits improved to 9-5 overall and moved to 4-0 at the Rebel Spring Games, with victories over Findlay (Ohio) and Dowling (N.Y.).
SDSU 3, Findlay (Ohio) 1
Freshmen pitchers Kiley Schwedhelm and Kim Westendorf combined on a two-hitter as the Jackrabbits opened the day with a 3-1 victory over Findlay (Ohio).
After the Oilers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an unearned run, SDSU took the lead in the fourth. Ali Adair reached on a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steph Kuhl and reached third on a base hit by Bobbie Jo Mitchell. Following a stolen base by Mitchell, Kassy Hernandez drove in both runners with a base hit.
Kuhl tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, driving in Ashley Kalina with a base hit.
Schwedhelm struck out four batters in five innings of work to improve to 3-0 overall. Westendorf notched five strikeouts among the six outs she recorded in earning her second save in as many days.
SDSU 15, Dowling (N.Y.) 7 (6 inn.)
Kassy Hernandez was 2-for-5 and tallied six runs batted in with a pair of bases-clearing doubles as the Jackrabbits won in six innings by a 15-7 margin over Dowling (N.Y.).
Ashley Kalina added two hits, including her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
SDSU led 10-1 after two innings, posting four runs in the top of the first and six more in the second.
Dowling stayed in the game thanks to wildness by Jackrabbit pitchers Jordan Bottorff and Kim Westendorf, who combined to walk eight batters. Bottorff worked the first four innings to pick up the victory.
SDSU plays a pair of morning games Wednesday, taking on Bellarmine (Ky.) at 8:50 a.m. Eastern Time (7:50 a.m. Central) and meeting Central Missouri State at 10:40 a.m. ET.
