Huskers Open Homestand vs. South Dakota State

After playing its first 10 games on the road, the Nebraska baseball team finally opens the home portion of its schedule this weekend, as the No. 22 Huskers play host to South Dakota State. First pitch for the opening day tilt is set for 2:05 p.m., and Friday’s contest opens a 12-game homestand for the Huskers. The series continues with a twinbill on Saturday afternoon and concludes on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers (8-2) extended their season-opening win streak to eight games with a 4-3 win over seventh-ranked Rice on Friday before dropping the final two games at the Round Rock College Classic. The weekend performance dropped the Huskers from 18th to 23rd in the Collegiate Baseball poll, while NU dipped from 21st to 22nd in the Sports Weekly poll released Monday. . . .

Jacks drop series opener at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska scored four times in the bottom of the first inning and Joba Chamberlain struck out nine South Dakota State hitters as the 22nd-ranked Cornhuskers opened a four-game series with a 7-2 win Friday at Haymarket Park.

The Jackrabbits dropped to 2-7 overall, while Nebraska improved to 9-2.

Nebraska opened the scoring early as Bryce Nimmo led off the game with a base hit and scored on a double by Joe Simokaitis off Jackrabbit starter Tyson Bothof. After an RBI groundout by Curtis Ledbetter, Daniel Bruce plated the final two runs of the inning with a triple to center field.

The Cornhuskers made the game 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Alex Gordon and a base hit by Brandon Buckman. The final Nebraska run came on a solo home run by Brandon Fusilier in the sixth.

SDSU got on the board in the seventh as Tony Lane singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Nebraska throwing error. The Jacks added a run in the eighth off reliever Mike Harmelink as Lane singled home Kyle Sytsma, who led off the inning with a walk.

Lane ended the game with two of SDSU's five hits.

Chamberlain, a right-hander from Lincoln, allowed just three hits and walked two batters over seven innings as he improved to 3-0.

Bothof, 1-1, worked the first seven innings for the Jackrabbits. He surrendered nine hits and five walks, while striking out one. Gary Olechoski pitched a scoreless eighth inning for SDSU.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.

I know Bruce's first-inning fly ball goes in the scorebook as a triple, but in reality, it was a warning-track can of corn. The wind blew it all over the place, and Mintken finally had to make a dive for it but missed. That was the second wind-aided hit of the inning for NU. We should have been out of the inning with minimal damage. Could have been more like a 4-2 or even a 3-2 game. And we had chances in the 8th and 9th to score more.

Tim Hanigan made an awesome diving catch at the foul pole on the track that got a big round of applause from the Husker fans. I thought Bothof pitched a pretty good game, especially if you throw out the trouble in the first. He threw 127 pitches in seven innings though. Olechoski darn near struck out the side in the ninth and made the first two Huskers look silly.

Matching the depth of the Huskers' pitching staff the rest of the weekend will be really tough, especially since they've been off all week, and we've already played four games. It sure would be nice to at least get one win or take two of the last three.

If I can figure out how to do it, I'll upload a couple pictures I took at the game today.

Huskers Down Jackrabbits, 7-2

Lincoln – Joba Chamberlain (Lincoln, Neb.) allowed one run and fanned nine over seven innings, as Nebraska topped South Dakota State, 7-2, Friday afternoon at Hawks Field.

Chamberlain, who improved to 3-0 with his third straight win, took a no-hitter into the sixth and held the Jackrabbits off the scoreboard until the seventh, as the Huskers improved to 9-2 on the year. Chamberlain struck out nine - his third straight outing of at least nine strikeouts - and didn’t allow a runner into scoring position until the sixth.

"Joba was great," Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. "He gave up a few base hits, but he was throwing a lot of strikes."

The right-hander was back by a Husker offense scored four runs in the first inning to take command. Daniel Bruce (Omaha, Neb.) provided the game’s big hit, a two-out, two-run triple to center off SDSU starter Tyson Bothof. . . .

The visitors got on the scoreboard in the seventh, as Tony Lane, who had two of the Jackrabbits’ (2-7) five hits, opened the frame with a single and eventually scored on a Husker error. In the eighth, SDSU trimmed the lead to 7-2 off reliever Mike Harmelink on Lane’s RBI single.

Harmelink, who was making his Husker debut after Tommy John surgery in December of 2003, settled down and finished with three strikeouts in two innings, getting the final two batters of the game on strikeouts.

The Huskers will continue the series Saturday afternoon with a twinbill beginning at 12:05 p.m. Left-hander Zach Kroenke (0-1, 7.36 ERA) will start the opener, while freshman Johnny Dorn (0-1, 1.04 ERA) will take the hill in the nightcap.

Part of me likes the fact we are scheduling the "Big Boys" in baseball but another part of me wishes we would stick with more lower level D1 schools and mid level D1 schools like the Mo Valley.  Just don't know what we get out of going to NE and getting our brains beaten out.  Let's go to places like Umkc or Bradley or No Illinois where we can compete better.  Maybe in five or 10 years go back to LIncoln.  It just seems to destroy our guys spirit before the season is 1/3 over.

Are there guarantee $$ in college baseball like football and basketball? If so- what kind of money are we talking about for teams like the Huskers?

1,000 a game is good, sometimes they may pay for the entire trip.

It all boils down to pitching. Need to get large frame guys with loose arms from the area (SD,Nd,Wyo, MN, Iowa) that throw 82-85 and hope they develop to 87-91 guys with some command.

Going to need more than 3.5 scholarships though.

We currently offer 4.0 scholarships.  Up from 3.5 during our D-II days.  Like all other sports I think we want to add more scholarships for baseball (D-I limit is 11.7 scholarships), it will just take time (unless someone drops $20 million on the athletic department tomorrow).

P.S. sdman, we have lots of Mid-Major teams on this year's schedule.  Creighton, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Northern Iowa, and Southern Illinois from the Missouri Valley.  Valpo from the Mid-Con (UMKC does not offer baseball).  Butler from the Horizon League.  Arkansas State from the Sun Belt.  SEMO from the Ohio Valley.

We also play schools from "Big Name" conferences as well.  Kansas, Kansas State, and Nebraska (highest ranked team we will probably face all year, #22) from the Big XII.  Notre Dame from the Big East.  Minnesota from the Big 10.

Mix in some good Independents like NDSU, and Utah Valley State and some lower division schools like Rockhurst, Baker, and North Dakota and you have a pretty good transition year schedule in my opinion.

The reason we have all the big dogs at the front end of the schedule is because that's the only time they are willing and/or able to play us. Similar to the basketball season. Baseball may be the game where the moral of each individual player is most important. In a game full of one on one battles, a confident player is going to defeat the hesitant player most of the time. I hope our guys don't let their confidence take a beating with the early blowouts. It would be nice to see us pound out a 10-0 drubbing of somebody soon.
