Aces Now 6-0 In One-Run Games After Winning 6-5 Saturday

The University of Evansville baseball team is making a habit out of winning close games. UE overcame a 4-0 deficit Saturday to beat South Dakota State 6-5 at Braun Stadium. The 19-5 Purple Aces close out the series against the 3-13 Jackrabbits Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. . . .

Down 4-0 in the fourth, Evansville made it 4-2 on an RBI double by Ryan Barrett and an RBI single by Gabe Bauer. UE made it 4-3 in the fifth when Kyle Smith scored on a wild pitch following a lead-off triple. After Tyson Fisher gave South Dakota State a 5-3 lead in the sixth with a home run, Evansville cut the margin to one again in the home half of the inning on an Eric Jones double that scored Ryan Barrett, who walked to lead off.

Then in the seventh, Erik Lis doubled, went to third on a ground-out, and tied the game on Jeff Fontaine's sacrifice fly that was dropped by left fielder Pat Farrell. Fontaine wound up at second, advanced to third on Robbie Minor's grounder, and scored the game-winner on Barrett's dribbler down the third base line.

UE's bullpen closed out the victory. Starter Adam Rogers, and relievers Cory Julian and Nathan Doty combined to set down the 'Jacks in the seventh, Doty pitched a perfect eighth, and Murray preserved Doty's first victory at UE by setting down the side in order in the ninth.

"A lot of our close wins have to do with our bullpen," said UE coach Dave Schrage. "We've held leads late and then we've been able to go to Murray to close it out. Julian and Doty did very well today. That's the fourth time we used Julian this week.

"It was a grind-it-out type victory, but we seem to be used to that. Right now the players have the attitude, 'We're not going to lose.' That's the kind of attitude you want to want to build into your program."

Saturday's win was UE's fifth in a row, and 11th in its last 12 games.

Let's re-group and get them tomorrow.

    Go State! ;D

Aces Trump Jacks, 10-9, With Two In Ninth

EVANSVILLE, Ind.--The University of Evansville baseball team improved to 20-5 overall on Sunday afternoon by rallying for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to post a wild 10-9 victory over the visiting South Dakota State University Jackrabbits at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

Evansville won the game on a dropped pop fly by South Dakota State’s second baseman with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning which scored two runs to help UE rally from a 9-8 deficit. The dropped fly ball capped a wild game that saw 19 runs, 20 hits, six errors, and 27 runners left on base by the two teams.

“I really don’t know what to say about today’s game,” said UE head coach Dave Schrage. “Obviously, we are very fortunate to come out with a victory. We committed four errors, walked nine batters, and hit four more, and still won. You don’t usually win games like that. . . .

We should have won all three games this weekend. Still the win over Notre Dame was huge. Up next Ill. State.

      Go State! ;D
