Valpo Falls To Northern Illinois Despite Rupno's Four RBIs

DeKalb, Ill. - Jon Rupno's three-run home run helped Valpo trim an early deficit, but Northern Illinois went on to defeat the Crusaders 12-8. Rupno finished with two hits and four RBIs, while Josh Piazza added two hits and two RBIs.

A four-run fourth inning helped Valpo ( 4-8 ) cut the Huskies' lead to 8-4. Mike Arensdorff, Kevin Kutansky and Colin Reynolds had consecutive singles to begin the frame. After Matt Augustine delivered a sacrifice fly, Rupno belted his first career home run - a three-run shot - over the right field wall.

Northern Illinois (4-12) added a run in the fifth before the Crusaders plated three more in the sixth to pull within 9-7. Rupno's RBI single and Piazza's two-run double highlighted the inning.  .  .  .

Valpo is scheduled to host South Dakota State on Friday in a doubleheader beginning at noon. Wednesday's scheduled game at Purdue was cancelled due to unsuitable field conditions.

    Baseball Schedule Changed
Weather has forced a couple of changes in the South Dakota State baseball schedule, including the home opener.

SDSU's doubleheader at Valparaiso, scheduled Friday (March 25) has been postponed to Saturday. The teams will play a single game on Sunday.

And SDSU's home opening series against Rockhurst on Monday and Tuesday, March 28-29, has been cancelled.

That means SDSU's home opener will be on Saturday, April 2, against North Dakota. The teams will play one nine-inning game starting at 5:30 p.m., then have a doubleheader on Sunday, April 3.

SDSU has added a pair of games with Dakota Wesleyan to replace the Rockhurst games. SDSU will play DWU at Mitchell next Wednesday, March 30, at 4 p.m. Dakota Wesleyan will return to Brookings on Wednesday, April 6. Both will be single nine-inning games.

    Go State!  ;D
