Tuition to increase 5% at S.D. universities
Regents president says state is least expensive in region

RAPID CITY - A typical student at a South Dakota public university will pay 5 percent more in tuition and fees next fall, an additional cost of about $244 for the 2005-06 school year.

The South Dakota Board of Regents set rates Thursday for the next school year, and President Harvey Jewett said the increase is modest. This past year, students saw an average increase of $266 in tuition and fees.

"States around us are going up double digits," Jewett said. "We have the least expensive college education in the region."

The average in-state undergraduate student taking 32 credit hours a year will pay $5,078 in 2005-06 for tuition and the two mandatory fees: the university support fee and general activity fee.

The cost increase will be greater for students at the University of South Dakota and Northern State University because regents approved fee increases requested by those two schools.

    Re: Tuition hike

For the most part students should be really happy with the 5% increase. The NSU increase is to provide 80,000 in fees to be used for student activities/clubs etc. This will keep them from having to cut student activities and events.

The USD increase is $4.95 per credit hour and $68.75 food service facility fee per semester. This is to spend 15,460,000 on a new student union for USD. Statewide numbers

    Student Union Square Footage
    BHSU 50,004
    DSU 24,198
    NSU 46,680
    SDSU 131,524
    Tech 59,856
    USD 70,198

Even after spending 15.5 million the USD new union will only be 72,018 square feet.

SDSU's union is definately DI quality. We are also still on schedule for July 1.
