  • Dakota Wesleyan - Baseball

This is an add-on game to replace some of those we have had canceled due to weather. We are in Mitchell for the first one and DWU will be coming to Bob Sheldon a little later in April. The Tigers are a pretty good NAIA team, this is no gimme. The boys will need to be ready to play. Here is a link to the DWU baseball site:

    Jacks Outlast DWU 12-11

BROOKINGS, SD - South Dakota State opened a 10-0 lead, then hung on to defeat Dakota Wesleyan 12-11 in baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

It was the fourth straight victory for the Jackrabbits, now 7-19. DWU fell to 22-12. SDSU will play at Indiana State Friday while DWU’s next action is at Dordt Saturday.

On a day when DWU used a different pitcher each inning, it took one pitch from SDSU’s third pitcher of the ninth inning to preserve the victory.

Gary Olechoski came on with the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at first with two outs. He threw one pitch. Brian Pollard grounded out to third to end the game. It was Olechoski’s third save in the last four games.

It was a game which moved quickly through the first four and one-half innings, then saw 20 runs scored the rest of the way.

SDSU took a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Nick Adams and Chris Iverson and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Sytsma.

And the Jacks had a seven-run out-burst in the fifth, getting four hits, two walks, and two hit batters. Tyson Fisher had a two-run double while Adams and Iverson had RBI singles.

SDSU starter Kasey Keller had a shutout through five innings before DWU scored four in the sixth highlighted by a three-run homer from Justin Chiasson.

SDSU built the lead to 12-4 in the seventh when Sytsma singled, Korby Mintken doubled to drive in Systma, and Fisher record his fourth RBI of the game when he doubled to drive in Mintkin.

But DWU wasn’t finished. Aided by three walks and two hit batters, the Tigers scored seven in the ninth keeping a two-out rally alive with consecutive run-scoring singles from Luke Swartz, Chris Marek and David Roberts.

    That’s when Olechoski came in.

Iverson led SDSU’s 14-hit attack with three singles while Fisher, Adams, Systma and Mintken had two hits each. All nine starters scored at least one run for the Jacks.

DWU had 13 hits, three by Thomas Gulledge and two each from Matt Buschbach and Luke Swartz.
