Nice little story coming from ISU.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State will host South Dakota State for a four-game series over the weekend at Sycamore Field. SDSU is in its first year of transition into NCAA Division I and has posted a 7-19 mark against an impressive schedule. The Jackrabbits only have two wins over NCAA Division I schools this season but both wins were over teams from Indiana (Notre Dame and Butler). The Sycamores had built some momentum, having won three of four, heading into a clash with Indiana on Wednesday. However, ISU was unable to convert on several quality scoring chances late in the game as they dropped a 6-4 decision to the Hoosiers. This series is the final weekend of non-conference action for ISU as they face first-place Creigton at Sycamore field next weekend.  .  .  .

Go Jackrabbits, beat the Sycamores!  ;D

      Indiana State Edges SDSU 7-6

TERRE HAUTE, IN - Indiana State broke a 6-6 tie with an unearned run in the seventh inning and made it stand up for a 7-6 victory over South Dakota State in baseball Friday night at Sycamore Field.

Rance Fosdick singled to lead off the ISU seventh, moved up on a sacrifice, and scored on an error.

SDSU had leads of 1-0, 4-1, 5-4 and 6-4, but the Sycamores kept coming back ... and the Jacks stranded 16 runners in the game. . . .

SDSU is now 7-20 for the season while ISU is 14-15. The teams will meet in a double head Saturday afternoon.

Indiana State 7, South Dakota State 6
      South Dakota State ..... 001 311 000 - 6 8 4
      Indiana State .............. 001 302 10x - 7 9 2

These one run losses are starting to get annoying. > Oh well tomorrow is another day.

SYCAMORES EARN DRAMATIC 9-8 WIN OVER SDSU

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State gave up a four-run lead in the ninth, but a two-out Chris Schmidt single in the bottom of the ninth gave ISU a 9-8 victory over South Dakota State on Sunday. The Sycamores sweeep the four-game series and improve to 17-15 overall.

ISU fell behind 3-0 in the first inning as Greg Geary hit a three-run home run to left field. The Sycamore bats came alive in the third inning as Tim Brewer led off with a single and scored on a double by Marcus Arnter. Arnter then came around to score on a double by Jake Eigsti.

After SDSU scored in the next frame, the Sycamores took advantage of Jackrabbit mistakes in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored five times to take a 7-4 lead. ISU only had two hits in the inning, but SDSU gave up two walks, hit a batter, and committed an error.

The Sycamores scored what seemed like a meaningless run in the bottom of the eighth when Schmidt singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Tyler Malone to give ISU an 8-4 advantage heading into the ninth.

However, SDSU did not quit as pinch-hitter Kasey Keller homered down the left field line to cut the lead to 8-5. After a hit-by-pitch and a single, Geary came to the plate with two outs and again Geary placed one over the left field wall, to tie the score 8-8.

In the bottom of the inning, Jake Eigsti drew a one-out walk. After a strikeout, Eigsti stole second base setting up the heroics by Schmidt.

Schmidt finished the day with three hits and two runs, and Brewer also added three hits for the Sycamores who finished with 11 base knocks. Greg Geary led SDSU with three hits and six runs batted in.

Josh Varno started for ISU and allowed three runs in two innings of action. Adam Tyler threw the next three innings giving up only two hits and one run, and Andrew Galle pitched two shutout innings allowing only one hit. Clay Kovac (3-1) earned the win despite giving up four runs on three hits in two innings.  .  .  .

Minnesota up next for the Jackrabbits. Our next chance in the Valley comes when the Bluejays head up the road to play in South Dakota on April 26th. We will also see the Panthers of UNI on May 10th and 11th and Southern Ill. (May13-15) to round our our Valley tour in '05.

        Go State!  ;D
