NO, I thought it was a courtesy ad provided by Craig and Mike since they have so much ad money coming in and they also prefer SDSU over USD. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sioux Falls set for debut of Division I
SDSU, Minnesota play baseball rematch today

            IF YOU'RE GOING
            What: SDSU vs. Minnesota baseball
When: 3 p.m. today (gates open at 1:30)
            Where: Sioux Falls Stadium
Tickets: $5 for adults, children in grade 12 and younger free.

The city's rodent population will get a little bigger today when the Minnesota Golden Gophers' baseball team visits town.

South Dakota State will play host to the Big Ten opponent, with a 3 p.m. start at Sioux Falls Stadium. It is the first time SDSU has brought a Division I event to South Dakota's biggest city since beginning the transition last fall.

"It's something to look forward to for the kids who play up here at South Dakota State," said Chris Iverson, a sophomore shortstop from Pierre. "It's an opportunity for us to play in front of a nice crowd in a nice area in Sioux Falls and in a nice stadium."

The Gophers defeated SDSU 8-5 last Wednesday in Minneapolis, leaving the Jackrabbits with an unsatisfied feeling about their performance.

Minnesota broke open that game with a six-run fourth inning, which included a botched double play that Coach Reggie Christiansen said opened the flood gates. Even though SDSU pared the Gophers' lead to two, the first-year coach said his team was never really in a position to win.

"You're never happy with a loss," said senior first baseman Greg Geary, a Rapid City native. "We kind of came out flat last week. We just have to come out fast right away with some energy and jump on them."

Minnesota is coming off a four-game weekend at Penn State, where the Gophers split with the Nittany Lions. Minnesota is currently 17-15 overall, tied for first place in the Big Ten with Illinois with a 9-3 league record. Gophers first baseman Andy Hunter was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, going 9-for-15 against Penn State.

Christian said non-conference games against lesser names are tough for big-time programs like Minnesota.

"Having been at Kansas, I know that when you play in the Big 12 or in the Big Ten, it's always tough to play a South Dakota State mid-week, which is good for us," he said. "It gives us an opportunity to win a game that maybe, to be quite honest, at this point in our progression to Division I that we shouldn't win."

SDSU is 10-24 after sweeping a three-game set with North Dakota State over the weekend. The Jacks' biggest victory this season came against Notre Dame in March.

Mike, I never said school in Sioux Falls was letting out early specifically for the Jacks baseball game. I indicated the Jacks would be marketing to kids which they are doing. I heard you make the same statement on your heralded radio program. Nothing like letting the truth getting in the way of a good story.

Posted February 1st under the "SDSU Baseball Schedule" thread by JACKGUYII:

"Sioux Falls Stadium is a beautiful park. Evidently it will be kids day for I believe the Minnesota game and you will see a lot kids let out of school to enjoy the ballgame and fill the park. Should be a great atmosphere."

Read it however you want and make your own judgement if that's what you think I implied. I guess based on your lack of substantive contribution to this site I should expect nothing less.

Any word on the game today? I wasn't able to attend, and don't believe it would still be on now.

                      Re: Minnesota - Baseball

I listened to the WNAX broadcast of the game. Jacks lost 19 to 13 in 10 innings. Jacks were trailing 13 to 10 in bottom of the ninth and I think Chris Iverson homered with two on and tied the game at 13 all. Jacks stranded runners in the bottom of the ninth and went into extra innings. The Jacks had used 9 of 11 pitchers at this point and a true freshman Huber could not get good strikes across the plate. The Gophers scored six runs, but the three outs were all three pop flies that were caught deep, and could have been more trouble. I think we just dont have the defense and pitching depth. We got way too much youth to hang on and win a big one like this one. Its too bad that Reggie could not have brought more players with him from Kansas. Tyson Bothof that came from KU is a senior and its shame he does not have more eligibilty. He got a few innings in to day but could not go 9 innings like he did in the first game with NDSU, which we won 10-1.

I am please that we took the Gophers to extra innings, but this game was one that was winable. Our baseball team is much like our men's BB, we need time to build the talent pool.

Here is a link to the Gopher baseball website for their writeup and box score of the game.

I was hoping for a nice sunny 70 degree day but atleast it stopped raining shortly before the game started. I was late arriving for the game and I was ticket #975 with a few more after me, I would guess attendance of 1000-1100 not including kids who got in free. With good weather, the crowd could easily have been twice that amount.

SDSUFAN has some good points. I would place more emphasis on the pitching. The rightfielder made some nice plays including the throw to home in the first, and later with a nice running catch at the warning track and a throw into second on a ball that took a bad hop over the first baseman.

I can't wait for the Creighton game next Tuesday. With a 6PM start and the weather cooperating hope to see a larger crowd next week!

After reviewing the Gopher Press release, I got the homer in the 9th wrong. Three runs were scored by singles. The Jacks were able to hit this one Gopher pitcher consistently, and that is how the score became tied in the bottom of the 9th. I dont think the 1025 in attendence were expecting extra innings so if there is a silver lining, extra innings is that. A win would have been much pleasing to all concern, but I guess it was not meant to be.
