Lowery just missed the sub 4 mile. I think his time was 4:01.3. Lots of highlights on the local news, showed a big crowd standing and cheering as he came down the last 100m. Also showed him lapping another runner as he crossed the tape ;D.

Some say that as the number of colleges that make the trip to the Howard Wood Relays has declined, so has the excitement and incentive for the college athletes.

    Tell that to Brad Lowery.

The South Dakota State senior brought the fans to their feet with a dramatic run in the Men's Open Mile, narrowly missing out on becoming the first athlete in South Dakota history to break the 4-minute mark on a South Dakota track. His official time of 4:01.67 was his personal best time, a Howard Wood meet and stadium record, a school record, and a state collegiate record.Lowery was literally racing against the clock on the final straightaway, as the numbers ticked towards 4 minutes right in front of him.

The crowd sighed in disappointment as the clock ticked past the mark, but gave the Pierre grad two standing ovations afterward."It was very special," Lowery said. "Finishing up was pretty tough with the wind, but I just wanted to give a great effort for all the fans. Every track fan in South Dakota was here, and the crowd was excited, so it feels great."  .  .  .

And while his time on Friday was somewhat bittersweet, Lowery said he has no doubt that a sub-4 minute time is in his future."It's a little disappointing, you just have to wait for the right opportunity," he said. "The weather wasn't the strongest, but I think I'll get it in the near future."  .  .  .
