Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame honors 3 college athletes

RAPID CITY -- Steve Anderson and Greg Geary, who tied for the honors, are the local male college athletes of the year and Laura Tieszen is the female college athlete of the year.

The trio will be honored on Monday, May 16 at the 33rd annual Sports Recognition banquet at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Other honorees are male and female athletes of the year, professional and independent athletes of the year and new members of the Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame.

    * Geary: An outstanding versatile high school athlete, Geary continues to shine in baseball at South Dakota's only NCAA Division I school, South Dakota State. After 34 games of a 53-game schedule, Geary was the team's leading hitter with a .328 average. The Jacks' season ends on May 22. He led the team in RBI with 34 in the first 34 games and also led in home runs with six, and is three shy of the SDSU career record of 42 home runs by Billy McMacken. A year ago, as a junior, Geary received second-team all-North Central Conference recognition, finishing second in the league in hitting with a .373 average, tied for second in RBI and home runs, and set the SDSU single-season mark with 18 doubles. The standout first baseman set a SDSU record for home runs by a freshman with 12 in 2002. He made American Legion all-state baseball team while playing for Rapid City's Post 22 team. He also was an all-state football player and an all-Greater Dakota Conference basketball player at Rapid City Stevens.
