  • UNI - Baseball

After taking last week off for finals, the Jackrabbits return to action Tuesday as they take on former NCC member, and current Missouri Valley member UNI in Waterloo, IA. Should be a good chance to pick up a win or two as the Panthers dropped a game earlier this season to the Bison of NDSU (it was NDSU's first D-I victory).

UNI has live stats as well as an audio link. Game time both nights is 6:30 pm.

The Panthers are 21-24 overall, 6-12 in the Valley.  UNI took two games from 29th-ranked Creighton last weekend to win their second straight MVC series.  UNI has won its last seven of 10 games.  Six Panther are batting above .300 with junior Nate Trumm leading the team with a .353 average and three home runs.  Junior Pat Moran has a team-high 41 RBIs and a .329 average.  Juniors Clayton Daniels and Mark Frieske lead the Panthers offensively in conference play with .340 and .323 averages, respectively.

Senior Brandon Rinnan has given up only one earned run in 21.0 innings pitched and has three saves.  Senior Kory Kelchen is 4-3 with a 4.43 ERA in 44.2 innings pitched.  LHP Aaron Jenkins has a 4.79 ERA with a team-high 46 strikeouts in 35.2 innings pitched

                  Re: UNI - Baseball

One glaring weakness with this years team is defense. This team averages close to two errors a game, that's not going to win you very many close ball games. And we have lost our fair share of those this year. I'm sure Coach Reggie will be preaching to them to work on that this off season.

                    Re: UNI - Baseball

I agree with Rabbitlivinginverm, we have lost a lot of close games and we do have more errors then I would like to see (although the college game is a little more susceptible to the E then the pro game) however, this year's team is very young (we start 4 Freshmen and a Sophomore) and they will get better.  Throw in the fact that, like our other sports, this season we have played a lot of games on the road (which in baseball may be an even bigger deal with the last at bat) and I think one might expect the results that we have seen.

That being said I am very satisfied with the direction the program is heading.  This team has already won more games then the past two seasons (against better competition) and still has 9 games left to play.  As Coach Ekeland's health declinded so did SDSU's record the past couple of seasons, so Coach Christiansen is dong a nice job of rebuilding (remember too that he was hired late, this next recruiting class will be his first with full preperation).

Baseball was a sport I didn't pay a ton of attention to in the past, but with the move to D-I I find myself much more interested.  Beating teams like Notre Dame, Butler, and taking Minnesota to extra innings in front of a crowd of over 1,000 in Sioux Falls has really made this spring interesting.  I am looking forward to seeing our Rabbits mature get more home games and win some of these close ones.

                    Go State!  ;D

                      Re: UNI - Baseball

Here is the story on the game:

                      http://www.gojacks.com

Jacks drop extra-inning game at UNI

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Northern Iowa pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, then scored in the 10th to defeat South Dakota State 5-4 in a wild college baseball game Tuesday at Riverfront Stadium.

The Panthers improved to 22-24 with the one-run victory. SDSU, which dropped to 15-30 overall, stranded 15 runners in the game after out-hitting the Panthers 12-8.  .  .  .

The Jackrabbits took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Greg Geary drew a two-out walk and scored on a triple to right field by Nick Adams.

UNI scored three runs in the fourth inning without the benefit of a run batted in. Dave Westergaard came home to score on a balk by Jackrabbit starter Francisco Torres, and the go-ahead run crossed home plate as Clayton Daniels scored on a failed pickoff attempt. The third run of the inning scored on a passed ball.

SDSU battled back to tie the game in the eighth. Adams started the rally by reaching on an error, moved to second on a base hit by Pat Farrell and advanced to third when Tyson Fisher walked to load the bases. Chris Iverson followed with a single to plate Adams, and Kyle Sytsma delivered Farrell with the tying run on a suicide squeeze.

The Jackrabbits regained the lead in the top of the ninth as Adams greeted UNI's fifth pitcher of the game, Taylor Sinclair, by singling home Tim Hanigan, who led off the inning with a walk. Sinclair prevented further damage by working out of a one-out jam with runners on second and third. He struck out Farrell, and after an intentional walk to Tyson Fisher, induced a fly ball to retire Iverson and end the threat.

SDSU closer Gary Olechoski put the Jackrabbits within a strike of victory in the bottom of the ninth despite loading the bases via a base hit to start the inning, a hit batter and an intentional walk. After striking out pinch-hitter Brandon Crisp with the bases full and one out, Olechoski walked Curt Bradley on a 3-2 pitch to send the game to extra innings.

The Jackrabbits again had opportunities to score in the 10th. After Tony Lane was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, Geary hit a shallow fly ball to right on which Korby Mintken could not advance. Sinclair again wiggled out of danger as Adams grounded out for the third out as he picked up his third win of the season.

UNI made good on its chance in the 10th as Brett Featherston led off the inning with a four-pitch walk. Patrick Moran followed with a sacrifice bunt and Mark Frieske flew out to center before Westergaard lined Olechoski's 2-2 pitch for a base hit to score Featherston.  .  .  .

Adams, Farrell, Fisher and Iverson all had two hits for the Jackrabbits. Geary doubled for the 50th time in his career in the third inning, tying Russ Langer (1998-2001) for the Jackrabbit career lead with 50.

The Jackrabbits will try for a series split with UNI on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

                      Northern Iowa 5, SDSU 4 (10 inn.)
                      SDSU 100 000 021 0 4-12-3
                      UNI 000 300 001 1 5-8-4
SDSU: Francisco Torres, Tigh Surdez (7), Gary Olechoski (9) and Kyle Sytsma. UNI: Aaron Jenkins, Kory Kelchen (5), Bryan Westphal (8 ), Brandon Rinnan (8 ), Taylor Sinclair (9) and Nate Trumm.
                      W-Sinclair (3-1). L-Olechoski (0-5). HR: none.

Time changed for SDSU-UNI baseball game

Wednesday's baseball game between South Dakota State and Northern Iowa has been moved ahead to 2 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Iowa, area.

The game will be played at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo. UNI defeated SDSU 5-4 in 10 innings Tuesday night.

Following the game, SDSU will travel to Southern Illinois for a three-game series Friday through Sunday in Carbondale, Ill.
