Five Jacks Earn All-Independent Softball Honors
Five South Dakota State University softball players have been honored on the Division I All-Independent Softball Team.
Leading the way for the Jackrabbits was first-team selection Ashley Kalina. A senior from Elkhorn, Neb., Kalina hit .311, while leading the team with 34 runs batted in and a single-season school-record eight home runs. A versatile performer who played six different positions for SDSU this season, Kalina ended her career as the SDSU all-time leader in games played (227), home runs (20), total bases (312), stolen bases (47) and at-bats (723).
Four other players, including freshman pitchers Kim Westendorf and Kiley Schwedhelm, received second-team honors. Westendorf, a native of Mankato, Minn., was the workhorse of the pitching staff, setting an SDSU single-season record with 51 appearances. She compiled a 16-19 record with three shutouts in 207 2/3 innings, while posting a 3.07 earned run average and 179 strikeouts.
Schwedhelm, who also played first base for the Jackrabbits, recorded a 7-1 record and 2.40 ERA in 18 appearances. The Papillion, Neb., native struck out 32 batters in 81 2/3 innings of work.
Also receiving second-team recognition were third baseman Kassy Hernandez and utility player Steph Kuhl. Hernandez, a junior from Yuma, Ariz., hit .299 with one home run and 21 RBI during her first season in the Jackrabbit lineup.
Kuhl, a sophomore from Logan, Iowa, led the team with a .314 batting average, while finishing second on the squad with 49 hits, five home runs and 32 RBI.
SDSU, coached by Shane Bouman, finished its inaugural season of Division I play with a 30-29 record, posting the program’s first winning season since 1997.
