        Baseball Team Defeats Notre Dame

EVANSVILLE, IN - Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville has, in a sense, become the home away from home for the South Dakota State baseball team.

On March 6, SDSU claimed its first victory over a Division I team when the Jacks defeated Butler at Evansville.

Saturday, the Jacks returned to Braun Stadium and defeated Notre Dame 13-7.

Tim Hanigan, a redshirt freshman from Lincoln, NE, led the 16-hit Jackrabbit attack going 5-for-6 with five runs batted in. He had a two-run single in the first inning, a run-scoring single to center in the second, a run-scoring single to left in the eighth and got his final RBI with a single in the ninth.

Batting ahead of Hanigan, Pat Farrell was 0-for-3 but walked three times and scored three runs while Tyson Fisher was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored three times.

While senior Josh Elliott started on the mound and earned the victory, it was sophomore Dalton Decker from Pierre who closed the door after the Irish tied the game at 7-7 with a pair of runs in the fifth.

SDSU scored twice in the top of the sixth to regain the lead, and Decker shut out Notre Dame on one hit over the final four innings.

Greg Geary was 3-for-6 while Chris Iverson had two hits and including a two-run single in the eighth inning.

SDSU opened a 6-0 lead getting two runs in the first on Hanigan’s single, and four in the second when one run scored on an error before Tony Lane, Geary and Hanigan each delivered RBI singles.

SDSU is now 3-12 and will play Evansville later today (Saturday) while Notre Dame is 7-9 for the season. Evansville defeated Notre Dame Friday night and is 18-5 for the season.

South Dakota State 13, Notre Dame 7

        South Dakota State .. 240 102 022 - 13 16 2
        Notre Dame .... 020 410 000 - 7 10 5
Josh Elliott, Dalton Decker (6) and Kyle Sytsma; Jeff Samardzija, Scott Bickford (4), Dan Kapala (6), Ryan Doherty (7), Tony Langford (8 ) and Sean Gaston. WP - Ellliott (1-3), LP - Bickford (1-1). Sv - Decker (1). HR- ND Craig Cooper.

Great win against a real name program.

With time (and the added scholarships over the years) these wins will become more and more routine. Getting there will be a rocky road but the payoff will be worth it. Just ask Bucknell or Vermont.

But for now, ring, ring, ring those bells and celebrate every success!

Highlight's of a story coming out of this weekend's action, from the Notre Dame's school paper:

BASEBALL: Irish drop two games in Aces Diamond Invite
              By Observer Sports
              Published: Monday, March 21, 2005

The differences between the Irish and their weekend opponents are glaring.
Notre Dame has an NCAA Division I record 16 straight 40-win seasons. South Dakota State has won three games in its first year in Division I.   Notre Dame has appeared in the NCAA tournament 19 times - six consecutive. Evansville has appeared in the NCAA tournament twice.
But none of those statistics mattered over the weekend in the Aces' Diamond Classic where the Irish fell to host Evansville on Friday 10-3 and to South Dakota State on Saturday 13-7.
Notre Dame (7-9) hoped to build on back-to-back wins after beating Northern Illinois in Thursday's game.
With six players batting over .300, Notre Dame's offensive production has been solid this season.
But the same old problems came back to bite the Irish - pitching and defense.
In three games from Thursday through Saturday, the Notre Dame defense committed eight errors and gave up 29 runs.
The Irish ran into a hot Evansville squad (19-5) Friday and a desperate South Dakota State bunch (3-13) Saturday.
While Evansville has had a strong start to the season, South Dakota State has struggled early due to a testy schedule.  .  .  .

Saturday the Irish trailed the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 7-2 heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning.
Then the offense made its move, as Notre Dame plated four runs.
Senior Scott Bickford entered the game for the Irish and shutdown the Jackrabbits in the top of the fifth.
His offense backed him up with a run in the bottom of the inning.
With the game tied 7-7, Bickford took the mound again in the sixth but yielded the two game-winning runs to South Dakota State.
He suffered his first loss of the season. The Jackrabbits added four late runs to cushion the lead.
After 16 games on the road to open the season, home could be the remedy for the Irish.
The Irish will try to get back on the winning track when they face Cincinnati Tuesday - playing at Frank Eck Stadium for the first time this season.

              Go State!  ;D

Jackrabbits defeat UND in a major sport. The Irish that is. I doubt anyone expected to be saying that 2 years ago.

                      Re: Notre Dame - Baseball

It is interesting to note that after the Jackrabbit Baseball
team defeated Notre Dame, the Irish went on to win 36 regular season games. Then they were selected to the field of 64 for the NCAA Divison I Baseball tournament. They are playing this weekend on the home field of the Univ. of Florida .That speaks well for the Jacks.
I saw the Jacks play several times this year and was impressed by their attitude and athletics abilities. We lost a number of one run games or our season win total would have been much higher. They seemed like they were not a first year Division I program and were not intimidated in the least. They give me the impression that they will compete in Division I just fine in coming years and will be fun to watch.

                      Go Jacks !!!

I agree! The Jacks did great this year! They will only get better with the experience they gained this year. The new recruits coming in next year will be exciting to watch develope.

The University of Notre Dame is the only UND that matters!

There are no UNO's that matter. Never have been!

One thing I noticed at the SDSU site and thats the background bio;s on Reggies two assistants. Both played for KU or were somehow connected to the KU program. These people are key to the transition in the baseball program. No question we are on our way to having a great D1 baseball program
