Kalina receives NCAA postgraduate award
South Dakota State University standout student-athlete Ashley Kalina has been selected as a recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Kalina, who graduated from SDSU this past spring with a degree in psychology, was one of 29 women from all three divisions within the NCAA to earn a $7,500 scholarship during the spring season. A native of Elkhorn, Neb., Kalina maintained a perfect 4.00 grade-point average, earning first-team academic All-America recognition from ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America.
On the softball field, Kalina hit .311 in 2005, while earning all-independent honors with 34 runs batted in and a single-season school-record eight home runs. A four-year starter, she ended her career as the SDSU all-time leader in games played (227), home runs (20), total bases (312), stolen bases (47) and at-bats (723).
Kalina has since signed a pro contract to play for the Nebraska Comets, who began play against all-star and national teams earlier this month.
To qualify for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall GPA of 3.20 or higher, and must have performed with distinction as a member of a varsity team. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student. Candidates are screened by seven regional selection committees, and the award recipients are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.
Kalina's award marks the sixth consecutive academic year that a Jackrabbit student-athlete has been awarded an NCAA Posgraduate Scholarship. Other recent recipients include: Casey Estling, men’s basketball, 1999-2000; Rose Ebnet, volleyball, 2000-01; Josh Ranek, football, 2001-02; Tyler Bryant, wrestling, 2002-03, and Scott Connot, football, 2003-04.
