  • NEW SCOREBOARDS

The Collegian has an article today on new scoreboards to be installed before next fall at various locations on campus. Extimated cost $2.5 million. They are being donated by the SDSU Foundation. They were approved by the Regents at their December meeting. Here is the link.

from what I had heard there will be a large video board and new scoreboard installed at C.A.S. All will be placed in the South Endzone along with some new seating.

This will give all our sports venues an improved atmosphere for the players and fans. By the Foundation buying the boards the revenue goes into the SDSU athletic department's pocket. I would also like to see naming rights at all of our faciltites. First Premier Stadium or Daktronics Arena has a nice ring to it and would bring in needed dollars

I like the feel of "Coughlin Alumni Stadium".  Can they just name the field (Daktronics Field at CAS?).  I like that a little better...

This is great news that I had heard rumors about. Glad that it is close to being done. 8)

I'm a traditionalist like many on this board however if naming rights to our athletic venues help generate more scholarships and help pay for upgrades to our facilities than I'm not going to be very vocal against it!

It will be interesting to see how the new south endzone seats will be situated under the scoreboard. The big scoreboard at Frost from what I understand will be huge and right over center court. I think the next major need is new lockerroom facilites for the football team. I would think the ex-players on this site would attest to that urgent need.

                No doubt about that!

Will there be other improvements/scoreboards at frost as well?

The ends could definately use some sprucing up, but we can't be greedy.

The old rule of thumb was to get a name on a building on campus one must contribute over 50% of the cost to construct the building. I would guess that without outright new construction there will be no naming rights on Frost Arena or Coughlin. If the field is redone at CAS, someone could theoretically get a name on it I suppose (as someone else mentioned, ex. Daktronics Field at CAS). Or new lockerrooms could have naming rights. I would guess though that Frost Arena will always be Frost Arena and Coughlin Alumni Stadium will always be CAS (even if it is refurbished).

I would be very careful on advocating the renaming of Coughlin Alumni Stadium to the highest bidder. There is a great deal of history regarding Charles Coughlin's generosity to SDSU. Plus, many alumni stepped forward in the late 50s and early 60s to provide gifts for the stadium. That stadium project caused a great deal of angst among our alumni and I would hate to see us go down that road again.

Perhaps there is a creative way to get some type of naming rights within the stadium.

Daktronics Field House has a nice ring for the new football lockerooms if they're interested. They are indeed in need of some upgrading. Although, I was ignorantly bliss while playing and didn't think too poorly of our fieldhouse. I guarantee if you ask anyone who has been lucky enough to run out from the fieldhouse onto the CAS field, past the Pride, into the engulfing applause of the blue and yellow faithful and they'll tell you the fieldhouse was second to none.

I agree. There have to be other naming opportunities.

I really like the idea of stadiums and arenas named after people who meant something important to an institution, rather than an opportunistic and self-interested corporation with deep pockets and a need for a marketing opportunity.

I am with  Alum Guy 100%. As a high schooler when CAS was built, the donation of $50,000 from Charles Coughlin was huge. If any one has notions about tight fisted folks, the Staduim for State was that.  Raising about a half of a million dollars was very hard to do.  Our current Foundation learned a great deal from this experience as mistakes were made. The original plans called for east side permanent seating, but that did not happen because the money just was not there. They went ahead about 1960 with the money they had and built one side of seating.

For older alums than myself this can be a sore subject.
Refer to your copy of College On Hill if you have doubts about what I am saying.

The Staduim for State was the first alumni effort of any kind in fundraising other than a long ago, pre WW1,  pipe organ fund raiser for Doner Audotorium that was conducted by Professor Mathews on a one on one basis. He got his name on a dorm long after his life had ended.

Also details of this arrangement between the Daktronics and the foundation are very sketchy at this point. I DON'T think we are going the USD route and and paying for it from advertising revenues. It sounds as though Daktronics is receiving cold cash up front, so I dont think they are giving the farm away at all and the proposed SDSU scoreboards do not appear to be a donation of any kind. Unless some one can tell me differently, its good business for my 100 shares of Daktronic stock.

I may be old fashioned also, but the stadiums have names alread, Coughlin, Frost, and also Stan Marshall HPER Center. Candlestick Park IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE Candlestick Park, IMO. ;D

As for the scoreboards, $2.5 mil for football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling and swimming makes me think that we might have gotten a pretty good deal Daktronics.
