  • Northern Kentucky to stay D-II

The Northern Kentucky Norse (who you may remember as the school we pounded to win the D-II Women's Basketball National Championship) are going to stay put in D-II for now.

NKU opts to remain in Div. II
But regents might reconsider move to Div. I at a later date

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS - Northern Kentucky University will remain in Division II athletics - for now.

The university's Board of Regents agreed Wednesday to postpone trying to move to Division I-AAA until a multiyear investment plan can be created.

Talk of moving to Division I accelerated after the state granted funding for a $60 million sports center. . . .

But studies revealed that many staff, students and community members want NKU to meet current athletic needs before shouldering Division I regulations.

NKU has said it lacks ideal facilities for Division II competition and will make $20 million to $25 million in additions and upgrades regardless of division. A move to Division I would add another $4.4 million to the athletic budget.

The funding would come largely from students in a substantial tuition increase, Votruba said. . . .

"This is not the type of institution that can afford to make a mistake at this level," said Votruba, who noted NKU's history of being underfunded. . . .

In a Carr Sports Associates Inc. report, consultant Bill Carr named the Horizon League and Mid-Continent Conference as potential options and recommended that the Norse not maintain independent status or create a new conference. . . .

"What we're most concerned about is how we can elevate our current activities with a focus on academics," chairman Chuck Brown said.

"We have capacity issues - our enrollment is 14,000 students, and we need to be able to provide facilities to handle those students, especially from an academic standpoint." . . .

Looks like the pool of schools to chose from just got a little smaller for the Horizon and Mid-Con. Even if they decide to go D-I latter we will still be that much farther down the reclassification process. Good news for us, I think.

    Go State! ;D

The 60 million dollar number for a facility is very interesting.  It seems on the small side when you consider that the Ralph Englestad Ice Arena cost was in excess of 100 million. I dont know if a basketball and a hockey facilities are comparable.  They probably are not.

When ever it becomes necessary to replace Frost or any other major facility, we are going to have a well thought out plan and means of paying for the future facility.

UNK does not have football and if they did then their move to D1AA could be of help to SDSU and NDSU in terms of the Great West Conference, but would be another competitor for membership in the Horizon and Mid Cont.

I agree SDSU if better off for getting started when we did, and anyother school that has aspirations to move up is going to be behind us in program development.

I find it interesting that most of their budget increase for going D1 would come from student fees.  Apparently their foundation and booster club are not very strong.
