  • Brookings Honored

Being an old history major (along with Poli Sci) this story warmed my heart.  Although the story doesn't mention them both Solberg Hall, and the Coughlin-Campanile were also success for those who work to preserve our historic structures.  8)

President George Bush and first lady Laura Bush have honored the Brookings community for its constant efforts to preserve its heritage.

In early July, Brookings was officially designated as a Preserve America Community, celebrating the city for outstanding support to preserve its historical buildings and land. Laura Bush is honorary chair of the federal program.

The city of 18,504 is the first South Dakota city to receive the designation. Lead and Vermillion are working on Preserve America Community applications, according to Jay Vogt, state historic preservation officer and director of the South Dakota State Historical Society.

As a Preserve America Community, Brookings will receive a certificate of recognition, a Preserve America Community road sign and authorization to the use the Preserve America logo.

The city also will be listed in a Web-based Preserve America Community directory.

President Bush has asked, in his 2006 budget, for $12.5 million in federal grant money. Preserve America communities would be eligible to apply for grants from $10,000 to $100,000.  .  .  .

The Brookings Historical Preservation Commission has been active in supporting the preservation of historical neighborhoods and business buildings, said Brookings Mayor Scott Munsterman. The commission even helps the council write city ordinances pertaining to historical preservation.

"They have been a really good resource for the community," Munsterman said of the commission.

The renovation of the 1921 Brookings Middle School building is a major project in which the commission has been involved. Vacated by the school district in 1998, the building now is home to offices and residential apartments.

Main Street buildings in Brookings also have been preserved, and South Dakota State University's Woodbine Cottage, home to the university president, has been renovated.

SDSU President Peggy Miller said the commission and the state historical society were dedicated to keeping the house as close to its natural state as possible.

"Both SDSU and the commission had the same goal, which was to be certain that the historical house survived," she said. "All of us treasure the house and the history that it represents."

Munsterman said Brookings is a better community because of the residents' support for historical preservation.

"To me, (historical preservation) just seems to really enhance the quality and personality of a community," he said.

Patricia Fishback, chairman of the Brookings Historical Preservation Commission, said, "The fact that it is a community award is great and very appropriate for Brookings."
