    16-player roster contains only five juniors, seniors

    BROOKINGS - It's not often that a team can start the season with three losses in its first four games and be pleased.

    Then again, for a South Dakota State young squad, showing they can play with Division I competition could mean just as much as going unbeaten.

    The Jackrabbits kicked their season off over the weekend at the University of Oregon's Kickoff Classic, sweeping Gonzaga and losing a five-set match to defending Big Sky champion Eastern Washington.

    The games were sandwiched around a pair of three-set losses - to Portland State and host Oregon - that show there is a lot to learn.

    "I thought our team started out slow," Coach Andrew Palileo said. "You expect that, just because we're a young team. The blank stares you sometimes get from freshmen happened."

    SDSU heads to the Cyclone Classic this weekend in Ames, Iowa, with games against host Iowa State and Stephen F. Austin kicking off the two-day event Friday.

    Freshman outside hitter Danielle Norby left the team on Monday. Still, the remaining 16-player roster contains just one senior and four juniors after going 22-12 overall and 13-6 against Division I teams last year. . . . (read more)
