Martin named Offensive Player of the Week

South Dakota State University outside hitter Kristina Martin has been named the NCAA Division I Independent Volleyball Player of the Week for her efforts at the Black and Gold Challenge hosted by Wake Forest University last weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Martin, a 6-foot sophomore from Hubertus, Wis., earned all-tournament honors after tallying 61 kills (4.69 kpg) and a .405 hitting percentage (61-12-12) in three matches. She recorded career highs with 27 kills and seven blocks in a five-game loss to Wake Forest and added 24 kills and a .422 hitting percentage in a four-game defeat at the hands of Georgetown. Martin also tallied 10 kills and six blocks in the Jackrabbits’ four-game victory over Morehead State (Ky.).

Also an all-tournament selection at the Doublewood Inn Classic in Fargo, N.D., the weekend before, Martin has hit at a .444 clip over the last six matches. During that stretch, which covers 22 games, she has tallied 92 kills (4.18 kpg), 10 service aces (.45 sapg) and 20 blocks (.91 bpg).

For the season, Martin leads the team with a .323 hitting percentage, and ranks second on the squad with 196 kills (3.70 kpg) and 34 blocks (.64 bpg).

SDSU, 6-8 overall, travels to 17th-ranked Kansas State on Wednesday, before moving on to Colorado for matches at Air Force on Thursday and Northern Colorado on Saturday. The Jackrabbits open the home portion of their schedule Sept. 27 versus Drake (Iowa).
