Jackrabbits down Drake in four
Kristina Martin tallied a match-high 23 kills and fellow outside hitters Laura Slagter and Minette Ridenour each posted double-doubles as the South Dakota State University volleyball team opened the home season Tuesday with a four-game victory over Drake (Iowa).
Game scores were 30-27, 30-28, 28-30 and 30-16 in favor of Jackrabbits, who improved to 8-10 overall before a Frost Arena crowd of 747. The victory was SDSU's second of the season over Drake, which dropped to 1-13 overall.
Martin, a sophomore from Hubertus, Wis., hit .391 for the match with her 23 kills against five errors in 46 attempts. Slagter, a freshman from Roseville, Minn., recorded season highs with 19 kills and 16 digs to go along with a .341 hitting precentage (19-4-44) and four block assists.
SDSU out-hit the Bulldogs .274 to .173, recording 23 more kills in the match, 77 to 54.
Ridenour, meanwhile, did not play in Game 1 but came off the bench to notch 13 kills and 17 digs over the final three games for her team-leading 12th double-double of the season.
Kristie Klusaw was credited with 35 set assists before giving way to Stepahnie Behm early in Game 3. Behm set the rest of the way, tallying 26 assists.
On the defensive end, Samantha Pearson turned in a match-high 21 digs, while freshman Kathleen Hruska led the blocking crew with a season-high seven block assists.
Drake was led offensively by Megan Veltman with 17 kills. Eve Johnson contributed a double-double performance of 15 kills and 12 digs, while Betsy Funk chipped in with 43 set assists.
Beth Kranske led the Bulldog defense with 18 digs.
The Jackrabbits will host their annual Alumni Match Friday, followed by a return to regular season action Saturday against Utah Valley State. Both events begin at 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
