  • Hobo Day Tradition

About eight months ago there was a post on here concerning Hobo Day. Several people, especially current students, referred to the week at "Hobo Days."

This is not correct. There is a "Hobo Week" but no "Hobo Days."

To put this into perspective, the week leading up to Christmas is not called "Christmas Days."

Hobo Day is our homecoming. The week leading up to Hobo Day is Hobo Week.

Just thought I'd weigh in, although a little late, on the subject.

So is it your guys fault, that some local Law Enforcement is hoping for a "Cold & Rainy" Hobo Week?

I guess you've never heard of the "12 Days of Christmas"? ;D

Seriously, there is this midwestern think of calling any multi-day event "<insert name here> days". But usually, that's in very small towns.

Now that's a third variation. Hobo Day's is possessive. As in: I drank all of Hobo Day's beer. My good friend Hobo Day is very angry with me.

I'm with Alumguy. Drives me crazy when people refer to it as Hobo Days. It reminds me too much of that other university's "Dakota Days".

I'm not a big fan of political correctness and yes my grammar skills aren't the best. :P

I had a UC Davis fan all miffed because I refferred to them as Cal Davis. :-/

Worse yet, the host of the Jackrabbit show on KWSN kept referring to them as Cal Poly. Even through some attempts by Stig to emphasize UC-Davis.

I think their whole team was miffed as our public address announcer referred to them as either "The Aggies" or "Cal Davis" the entire game. I loved it.

                      Re: Hobo Day Tradition

The ancient alums who participate and read this board have recollections of SDSU promoting Hobo Day as the largest one day event in South Dakota. Those were the days when groups and clubs invested much in parade floats. High schools and area cities did not have marching competitions. These events common today were unheard of and the parade included countless area high school bands, and even a few unique marching units. The Hobo Cars were unbelievably dangerous but often humorous. TV was just catching on as entertainment. South Dakota had maybe two or three hundred percent more family farms, so coming to Brookings for a long parade was a very big deal. I know I was nine years old before I witnessed the first one. I was like the Russian comedian, and still say: "Such a country" when I think of the 1950 parade.

Times have changed so dramatically, that you younger guys and gals have entirely different perspective of Hobo Day and Hobo Week and countless changes have been made to continue the tradition. I am just happy that the tradition continues and with gusto. Have a enjoyable and safe Hobo Week and a wonderful Hobo Day. ;D
