  • Step up for the Pride

I saw a story on this in the new Jackrabbit Insider (Very well done V.J) and I clicked on the link below to get the details.  This is a great opportunity to help the Pride of the Dakotas.

Very nice indeed. It's donations and private funding this this that keep the pride from being limited in size and requiring tryouts to get in.

Good to see an Argus story about this effort, here are some highlights:

SDSU marching band launches fund drive
      Published: 09/9/05

      BROOKINGS

South Dakota State University's Pride of the Dakotas marching band will launch a $300,000 private fund-raising drive Saturday.

The money raised in the "Step up for the Pride" campaign will buy new equipment, support travel and provide scholarships. The band's membership has surpassed 400 members - more than doubling in size in the past decade. The band has been featured at two presidential inaugurations, the Fourth of July gala in Washington, D.C., and the Tournament of Roses Parade.

The kickoff will coincide with the band's pregame performance in the tailgate area north of Coughlin Alumni Stadium. The band will perform for alumni at 6 p.m. before entering the stadium. The SDSU football team plays Valparaiso at 7 p.m.

First Bank & Trust in Brookings has jump-started the campaign with a 2-to-1 match offer for individual gifts made through Hobo Day on Oct. 22. . . .

      Go State! ;D

Re: Step up for the Pride

I heard this years Pride will be the second largest band that SDSU has ever had.  I know this is a worthy fundraising endeavor.  I hope it the campaign is over by Hobo Day and the $300,000 is in the bank.

You guys rock!! I only wish NDSU would get it's act together and do some serious fund-raising for the Gold Star Band. We are a distant second to your band we need to upgrade.

How big could this band get? 400 is larger than the UM marching band. Are they as good as the UM?

Re: Step up for the Pride

Better. No brag, just fact. This band has played at Presidential Inaugurations, asked to perform at the Rose Parade (this is a unique honor as the only college bands ever invited to perform in that parade are from the universities playing in the Rose Bowl), been featured on PBS's "A Capitol Fourth (America's birthday party staged in the shadow of the US Capitol Building) and I could go on and on.

The great thing about the band, other than their great sound, is that the vast majority of members are NOT music majors. They are simply students who love to be a part of something special.

It is one of SDSU's greatest treasures.

Does anybody know what their budget is?

I don't know what their budget is, but I can say that (in my opinion) they're considerably better than the bands at Purdue and Oklahoma. The Iowa band is awfully good, but I'd still give the nod to the Pride.

Anyone hear how much the Pride has raised? I just submitted an online donation to beat the 2 for 1 match that ends on Hobo Day.

Re: Step up for the Pride

It sounds like they were close to their goal this weekend. I imagine if they are over, they don't want to announce so they can still get some donations trickling in. If this is true, it's good news, as they have probably maxed the 2:1 match.

Its being reported on the NDSU board that The Pride will not be going to the Fargodome. Has anyone heard if they are or not. Would love a little more noise for the Jacks, rather than listening to all the Bison fans......

I don't think they plan to. I asked a member if they had any trips and they said they didn't.

My guess is all the home games were enough this year.

It sounded like some of the Bison fans were pretty disappointed. They know a great band when they see and hear one.
