SDSU wins marathon to advance to title match

GREELEY, Colo. -- The South Dakota State University volleyball team saved its best for last Saturday afternoon, rallying for a five-game victory over IPFW to earn a berth in the championship of the Division I Independent Volleyball Championships.

SDSU, which evened its record at 16-16, avenged a five-game loss earlier in the season at Frost Arena to the Mastodons, 23-6 overall. The Jackrabbits won by scores of 27-30, 30-27, 30-32, 30-26 and 15-11, marking the first time in 14 matches SDSU won after losing Game 1.

SDSU's offense caught fire in Game 5, recording 11 kills without an error in 14 attacks, good for a .786 hitting percentage.

The Jackrabbits will face Utah Valley State in the championship match at 7:30 p.m. Mountain Time (8:30 p.m. Central) Saturday. The Wolverines, who swept SDSU in pool play on Friday, defeated host Northern Colorado in three games in the other semifinal.

An epic match that lasted two hours and 26 minutes featured two potent offensive attacks which combined for 164 kills. IPFW's Fabiana Souza recorded a match-high 34 kills and added 17 digs.

Jackrabbit outside hitter Minette Ridenour was nearly equal to the task, pounding 26 kills to match a career high, while adding 20 digs. Kristina Martin contributed a double-double with 23 kills and 17 digs, while Amy Anderson tallied 12 kills and seven blocks.

Setter Kristie Klusaw established new career highs with 76 assists and 16 digs. Samantha Pearson set a new career high with 29 digs and senior Sara Doschadis notched 15 as the Jackrabbits recorded 109 team digs.

Also for IPFW, Claire Jackson and Amanda Pfister notched 12 kills each. Nicole Howell added 11 kills and 12 digs. Peachy Jankowski led the Mastodon defense with 22 digs.
