why is hockey not a bigger deal in South Dakota? I always loved playing hockey and probably would have chosen it over basketball if given the opportunity, but was relegated to playing with cousins on the city pond as long as no one threw branches on the ice. Anyone have an idea? North Dakota and Minnesota are US hockey in the midwest.

I'm not sure, but I would guess geography.

Minnesota being the land of 10,000 lakes and ND (mainly Fargo and Grand Forks) being very close.

SD is a bit farther away, less lakes and bit warmer.

Hockey is popular in NE SD but not in the population areas. Huron, Brookings, Abeerdeen areas have more hockey interest. Sioux Falls has some. But they don't draw huge crowds.

I would like State to have a Hockey teams I think they could be very competitive. ALso is another expense for State.

Yankton is the newest community to have a ice rink which was completed this year. Brandon is looking at putting in an ice rink. SD Hockey is growing but does not get the press that basketball and wrestling does. Huron and some of the smaller hockey communities do a good job of getting it in the paper but if the Argus or the Rapid City Journal does not report it, most of SD will not here about it.
