Jackrabbits open tournament with win

GREELEY, Colo. -- Kristina Martin and Amy Anderson each recorded double digits in kills as South Dakota State opened the Division I Independent Volleyball Championships with a three-game sweep of Providence (R.I.) Thursday afternoon.

The Jackrabbits won by scores of 30-14, 30-24 and 30-11 . . .

Martin, a sophomore from Hubertus, Wis., led all players with 14 kills and added a .423 hitting percentage (14 kills, 3 errors in 26 attempts). Anderson, a sophomore middle hitter from Huron, contributed 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage (10-3-14) as SDSU out-hit the Friars .318 to -.048 for the match.

SDSU junior Minette Ridenour inched closer to the 1,000-kill mark with six kills, upping her career total to 997.

Kristie Klusaw posted a match-high 33 set assists and added a team-high six digs.

Providence was led by Allison Baker's six kills.

SDSU returns to pool-play action Friday afternoon with a match against Utah Valley State at 1 p.m. Mountain Time (2 p.m. Central). The Jackrabbits close out pool play Friday night against North Dakota State at 7 p.m. MT (8 p.m. Central).

SDSU drops Friday opener to UVSC

GREELEY, Colo. -- Minette Ridenour became the 10th South Dakota State University volleyball player to reach 1,000 career kills, but the Jackrabbits struggled all day against Utah Valley State, falling in three games Friday at the Division I Independent Volleyball Championships.

The Wolverines held SDSU to a season-low .061 hitting percentage in recording the 30-19, 30-19, 30-22 sweep. . . .


Next up for the Jacks, the Bison of NDSU.

The Jackrabbits beat the Bison for the forth time this season. This time 3-1. This moves the Jackrabbits into the Championship Round of the 2005 Division I Independent Volleyball Championships. Teams going to the Final Four include, from Pool A IPFW and Northern Colorado and from pool B SDSU and Utah Valley State. The tournament continues tomorrow.

UNC and UtVS have beaten us handily this year. I look forward to seeing what our coach and players can do to adjust. We could certainly improve at this level in volleyball and I think the universty is committed to doing so.

Jacks split with Utah Valley, NDSU

Minette Ridenour topped 1,000 career kills in SDSU's loss Friday to Utah Valley State.

GREELEY, Colo. -- Minette Ridenour posted a double-double with 21 kills and 21 digs to lead South Dakota State to a four-game victory over North Dakota State Friday night and a berth in the championship bracket of the Division I Independent Volleyball Championships.

Earlier in the day, Ridenour, a junior outside hitter from Council Bluffs, Iowa, became the 10th player in SDSU history to reach 1,000 career kills, but the Jackrabbits struggled against Utah Valley State, falling victim to a three-game sweep.

SDSU 3, North Dakota State 1
Ridenour led three Jackrabbit players in double figures for kills as SDSU won by scores of 30-19, 27-30, 30-24 and 30-22 to improve to 15-16 overall, including a 2-1 mark in pool play. North Dakota State, which fell to the Jackrabbits for the seventh consecutive time, dropped to 3-31 overall and 1-2 in pool play.

Emily Rooney contributed a season-high 11 kills and a .421 hitting percentage (11 kills, 3 errors in 19 attacks), while Kristina Martin added 10 kills.

Kristie Klusaw collected 49 set assists as SDSU out-hit the Bison .219 to .126.

Defensively, the Jackrabbits turned in a strong performance, out-digging NDSU 75 to 55. Samantha Pearson tallied 18 digs, with Sara Doschadis contributing 13. Amy Anderson recorded eight blocks.

NDSU was led by Kelly Lopez with 21 kills. Kim Hebl notched 13 and Christy Stuewe added 12.
Kari Fagnan posted 21 digs to share match-high honors.

Ridenour went over the 1,000-kill mark as recorded five in the match. Kristina Martin led the Jackrabbits with 11 kills.

Klusaw was credited with 27 assists and Pearson contributed a team-high 10 digs.

Utah Valley State was led by Camie Manwill, who posted a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Setter Lacee Koelliker added a double-double with 39 assists and 11 digs.

Anne Olsen tallied 12 kills, with senior libero Maegan Hoyt notching a match-high 13 digs.

SDSU resumes action at 10:30 a.m. Mountain Time (11:30 a.m. Central) on Saturday, taking on IPFW at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. The Mastodons finished play in Pool A undefeated. Northern Colorado and Utah Valley State will meet in the other semifinal matchup at 10:30 a.m. MT.

Semifinal losers will play for third place at 5 p.m. MT (6 p.m. CT). Winners will meet for the championship at 7:30 p.m. MT (8:30 p.m. CT).

SDSU takes second at independent tourney

GREELEY, Colo. -- Utah Valley State defeated South Dakota State for the second time in a little more than 24 hours to win the championship of the Division I Independent Volleyball Championships Saturday night at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.

The Wolverines, who swept SDSU on Friday afternoon in pool play, needed four games in the title match, winning by scores of 30-28, 31-29, 19-30 and 30-27. UVSC improved to 18-11 overall, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 16-17 overall.

Kristina Martin led the SDSU offensive attack with 18 kills, while all-tournament selection Amy Anderson added 16 kills and a .556 hitting percentage (16 kills, 1 error in 27 attacks). Anderson also recorded five block assists to up her season total to 125, putting her one away from tying the Jackrabbit single-season record set by Shauna Sturm in 2001.

Minette Ridenour posted another double-double with 13 kills and 21 digs, and Emily Rooney contibuted 12 kills.

Kristie Klusaw tallied 33 set assists and 12 digs, with Stephanie Behm added 27 assists. Libero Samantha Pearson, who also was named to the all-tournament team, notched 20 digs.

Tournament MVP Lacee Koelliker ran the UVSC offense with 59 assists and added 17 digs. She distributed the ball to four players who reached double digits in kills, including Camie Manwill, who turned in a double-double performance of 22 kills and 14 digs. Anne Olsen slammed 21 kills.

Jessica Endres and Brooke Adams each chipped in with 11 kills. Maegan Hoyt patrolled the back row by tallying a match-high 28 digs.

SDSU 3, IPFW 2
The Jackrabbits advanced to the title match by winning a five-game thriller Saturday morning against IPFW in semifinal action..

SDSU avenged a five-game loss earlier in the season at Frost Arena to the Mastodons, winning by scores of 27-30, 30-27, 30-32, 30-26 and 15-11. The victory marked the first time in 14 matches SDSU won after losing Game 1.

SDSU's offense caught fire in Game 5, recording 11 kills without an error in 14 attacks, good for a .786 hitting percentage.

An epic match that lasted two hours and 26 minutes featured two potent offensive attacks which combined for 164 kills. IPFW's Fabiana Souza recorded a match-high 34 kills and added 17 digs.

Ridenour was nearly equal to the task for the Jackrabbits, pounding 26 kills to match a career high, while adding 20 digs. Martin contributed a double-double with 23 kills and 17 digs, while Anderson tallied 12 kills and seven blocks.

Setter Klusaw established new career highs with 76 assists and 16 digs. Pearson set a new career high with 29 digs and Doschadis notched 15 as the Jackrabbits recorded 109 team digs.

Also for IPFW, Claire Jackson and Amanda Pfister notched 12 kills each. Nicole Howell added 11 kills and 12 digs. Peachy Jankowski led the Mastodon defense with 22 digs.

SDSU closes out the season Nov. 25-26 at the Baden Thanksgiving Tournament in Long Beach, Calif. The Jackrabbits will take on host Long Beach State in a 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time (3:30 p.m. Central) match on Nov. 25, before concluding the tournament versus UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 26.

Just a word of congratulations to Coach Palileo and the Jack volleyball team on taking second at the Independent Championships. We all know they would have liked to be #1, but they did well there.

Beating IPFW was huge. Their team took us out at Frost Arena and they are tough. So the win at Independents was especially sweet. And the competition against UVS for the championship was quite a match, even though it went 3-1 for UVS. Please note that the Jacks scored 27, 28, 29 and 30 points in the four matches. Can't get much closer than that. Way to go Jack volleyballers!!!

Congrats to the netters! As with all of our athletic squads, our volleyball squad will only get better and this showing is a clear indication of that.
