    Baseball signs pitcher, announces schedule

Rapid City Post 22 standout pitcher Mike Robinson has signed a national letter of intent, indicating he will enroll at South Dakota State University next fall and compete for the Jackrabbit baseball program.

Robinson, a senior at Rapid City Stevens High School, was instrumental in helping Rapid City Post 22 advance to the American Legion World Series. Under legendary head coach Dave Ploof, Robinson put together an unblemished 12-0 record. The left-hander compiled a 2.65 earned run average, recording 67 strikeouts in 78 innings this past summer.

Robinson is a 4.0 student at Stevens High and intends to major in engineering at SDSU. His sister, Lisa, is a member of the SDSU soccer team, while his brother, Matt, is a pitcher at the University of Kentucky.

“We are very excited that Mike chose SDSU in the recruiting process,” said head coach Reggie Christiansen. “We feel he is one of the best pitchers in the state as well as the region. He has a very high ceiling and will help to improve our pitching staff immediately. He will have an opoortunity to come in and pitch a lot as a freshman.”

Christiansen added “the signing of Mike is significant, obviously because he is a great player, but also it shows us that we can now keep the best pitcher in the state of South Dakota at home. I really think that the move to Division I has a lot to do with that.”

Christiansen also announced the 2006 schedule, in which the Jacks are slated to play a minimum of 57 games.

The Jacks will play 10 home games at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings and seven more at Sioux Falls Stadium this season. The home opener is set for March 28-29 against North Dakota.

The Jacks will once again play host to Minnesota in Sioux Falls, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. SDSU also will host Kansas State in a two-game series, May 16 at 6 p.m. and May 17 at 3 p.m.

The Jackrabbits conclude the season hosting the Independent Tournament May 18-21 in Sioux Falls.

North Dakota State, North Dakota, Southwest Minnesota State, Sioux Falls, Dakota Wesleyan and Waldorf (Iowa) will all come to Brookings. The weekend series with NDSU (April 22-23) will also be Alumni Weekend at Bob Shelden Field.

SDSU’s road schedule is highlighed by trips to NCAA Tournament qualifiers Nebraska and Creighton (Neb.).

SDSU will begin its second season of Division I play with an 18-game road swing, beginning with a two-game series Feb. 28 and March 1 at Kansas State.
