    SDSU heads to Vegas for Invite
    BROOKINGS, S.D. — After a one-week layoff the South Dakota State University wrestling team will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Cliff Keen Invitational.

    The Jacks will wrestle some of the nation’s top collegiate wrestlers from more than 50 different universities, including nationally ranked Illinois, Michigan, Cornell, Arizona State, Missouri and Wisconsin. All rankings come from the National Wrestling Coaches Association and were last updated this past Sunday.

    Action begins at 9 a.m. Friday, with weigh-ins beginning at 7 a.m. at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas.

    South Dakota State last wrestled at the Kaufman/Brand Open in Omaha, Neb.The Jacks combined for a 30-27 record at the open.

    LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Nate Althoff, a junior from Watertown, went 4-2 in competition to lead the South Dakota State University wrestling team at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend.

    In action Saturday, Althoff bowed out of the tournament falling to Steve Anceravage of Cornell University, 6-1. Althoff was coming off an 8-5 decision over Deonte Penn of Edinboro (Pa.) Friday night. Penn was the 15th rated 165-pound wrestler in the nation according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

    On Friday, Althoff bounced back from a first round loss, to defeat Cody Henriksen of Augustana, 6-2. He then pinned Cody Eardley of Western Wyoming in 2 minutes, 16 seconds to advance to the next round. After upending Lex Case of Boise State, 6-3, Althoff closed out the night defeating Penn.

    Sophomore Jason Stripling opened competition in the heavyweight division Friday with a 5-2 decision over Peter Bozynski of the Air Force Academy. After dropping a match to Tyler Shovlin of North Carolina-Greensboro, Stripling upended Dave Campbell of the University of Ohio, 4-2. He finished the invite with a 2-2 record.

    Alan Marvin, a freshman from Adrian, Mich., upended Bryce Leonhardt of the University of Wyoming by major decision, 12-2, to finish the tournament 1-2.

    Derek Pirner, a native of Elk Point, went 1-2 on the day. The sophomore recorded his lone win defeating Jon Gerhold of Missouri Valley, 4-2.

    In all, the Jackrabbits combined for a 9-16 record in Las Vegas.

    SDSU will open its dual season on Dec. 17 with a home match against North Carolina State. Start time for the match is 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
